Helping students bring Tet home

Spring is an opportunity for people to gather and reunite. However, for students living away from home, the coming of Tet is also the time when they feel homesick and worried because they cannot return home for Tet. Understanding that, provincial Students Association, colleges and universities in the province have organized practical and meaningful activities to take care of Tet for students with difficult circumstances.

Ticket of love

Bui Van Quan, a third-year student in cultural industry at Thu Dau Mot University (TDMU) held the ticket to his hometown in his hand and felt happy. He said: "I thought this year I would celebrate Tet away from home. However, with the attention of the school and the school's Youth Union, I received a round-trip ticket to return home. I was truly touched and grateful for the care of the school and the Youth Union for students living far from home”.

10 students from TDMU receive round-trip tickets to return home for Tet

Quan was born and raised in Thuong Xuan district, a remote area of Thanh Hoa province. His family has 3 sisters. Their parents are over 60 years old this year and currently work as farmers in their hometown. Last year, Quan's father suffered from a fatal illness and had to spend a large amount of money on treatment, causing difficulties to pile up. Quan always tries to study and take part-time jobs to earn money to pay school fees...

For 3 sisters Nguyen Thi Hai, Nguyen Thi Lan from TDMU’s faculty of foreign languages and Nguyen Xuan Tien from TDMU’s Institute of Technology, the joy is tripled when all 3 sisters this year also got receive round-trip tickets to return home for Tet. Their hometown is in Ha Tinh, with many siblings and their parents are over 65 years old. The father is a war invalid, receives policy salary while the mother's income from farming is not much. Currently, the 3 sisters have to take care of their own living expenses... With so many expenses to worry about, they do not dare think about buying tickets to go home for Tet...Nguyen Thi Thuong, Secretary of TDMU’s Youth Union said: "In the bustling spring atmosphere, many students are eager to return home to visit their families after a long year of studying. There are still students who can’t go home to celebrate Tet with my family for many reasons. TDMU’s Youth Union always cares and understands that feeling. With a desire of creating conditions for students to enjoy a warmer and more meaningful Tet, somewhat relieving homesick and getting more joy and motivation in life, TDMU has cooperated with its Youth Union to offer 10 pairs of round-trip Tet tickets to students who could not afford to return home for Tet. Along with that, the school organized the "Bringing Tet home" program. Coming to the program, students will be able to participate in experiencing such activities as “banh tet” (glutinous sticky rice cake) making contest, five-fruit tray arranging contest…For students who cannot return home for Tet, they will receive gifts from the school’s Youth Union Standing Committee and there are also many activities taking care of their cultural and spiritual lives, helping students welcome a warm and joyful spring".

Bringing Tet home

In a bid to take care of students with difficult circumstances during Tet, provincial Youth Union and Students Association have implemented many meaningful programs, including the "Tet bus” program for needy young workers and students with permanent residence in the Central and Northern regions, the "Warm gratitude on Tet holiday" program, the 2023 provincial Student Liaison Committee get-together and the "Year-End Meal" program for students who cannot return home to celebrate Tet. Tet care activities for students have shown the affection and concern of all-level authorities, sectors, organizations and individuals for students. Although these Tet gifts were not large, they helped students partially alleviate their difficulties and have a warm and complete Tet...
