High-voltage power grid protection enhanced in dry season

In the dry season, people flying kites and burning fields near the high-voltage grid safety corridor are often on increase, potentially posing a risk of electricity insecurity. Facing the situation, the functional sector is strengthening solutions to safely operate the high-voltage grid and prevent unfortunate incidents.

The functional forces propagate and remind people not to fly kites and objects near the high-voltage grid safety corridor

As noted by the reporters, in the past few days, the weather has been hot and windy, so in the evening, many people often gather in parks and open areas to play and fly kites. Specifically, at the vacant lot on D4 Road in Viet Sing residential area of Quarter 4 of An Phu ward in Thuan An city, many parents take their children to cool off and fly kites near the security corridor of 220kV high voltage gridline. Similarly, the park near the intersection of Ong Bo Bridge of Lai Thieu ward in Thuan An city also becomes a spot for many people to fly kites on cool off in the afternoons. However, the kite-flying point is close to the high-voltage grid area, which increases the risk of electricity insecurity. The kite if flied, falls and entangled in the operating power line poses a risk of causing a breakdown in the power grid, affecting people's life, production and business operations.

Along with kite flying, which threatens the safety of the high-voltage grid, the situation of people clearing and burning grass leading to fire spreading into the safety corridor of the high-voltage grid often occurs unpredictably in the dry season. Facing the situation, the electricity sector has been strengthening solutions to ensure the safety of high-voltage power grids and prevent unfortunate incidents.

Nguyen Vy - Deputy Director of Eastern Power Transmission 2 under Power Transmission Company 4, said that in the past time, the unit has actively implemented measures to ensure the safety of the 220kV high-voltage grid safety corridor in the dry season before the risk of kite flying, burning upland fields. From 2022, the unit has signed 8 plans to coordinate to protect the high-voltage power grid with the police of the localities where the power lines pass; at the same time, signed 34 cooperation minutes and 32 contracts to protect the high-voltage grid safety corridor with the People's Committees of communes, wards and townships. In addition, the unit has built and implemented 18 fire prevention plans for high-voltage grid safety corridors, organized clearing in areas with trees and dry grass to prevent fire incidents in and near the high-voltage grid safety corridor in order to ensure safe operation of the power grid in the dry season.

At the same time, the unit also coordinated with the Radio Stations of districts, towns and cities to propagate on loudspeakers the regulations on electrical safety to remind people in densely populated places and hostels not to erect scaffolding or objects that are at risk of violating the safety distance of the power grid. The unit also distributed more than 2,100 leaflets and 1,500 notebooks to students, installed 7 panels and 36 signs with propaganda content on electrical safety. In addition, the unit also coordinated with local authorities for individuals and organizations currently living and operating near the high-voltage grid safety corridor to sign 187 commitments on preventing the risk of power grid failures not to violate regulations on protection of high-voltage grid safety corridors.

“In recent days, the power grid operation management unit regularly broadcasts propaganda loudspeakers advising people not to fly kites and objects near the high-voltage grid safety corridor; at the same time, coordinate with local authorities to handle cases of intentional violations to ensure safe, continuous and stable electricity supply during peak time of heatwates. On the family side, parents must remind, prohibit and participate in supervising their children not to fly kites near power lines but choose to fly kites in large spaces without power lines or stations to ensure the safety. In case the kite is entangled in the power line, people are not allowed to climb up the power pole or use the tree to remove the kite, but must immediately notify the functional unit to avoid the risk of incident due to violation of the safe distance of electric discharge,” Vy recommended.
