Improving the quality of population

Achievements

Binh Duong province has over time reaped considered achievements in terms of mother-children healthcare and family planning. In 2011, the number of children born by women of childbearing age saw decrease. The rate of third children was lower in comparison to previous years.

The province has also made much progress in improving the quality of reproductive healthcare services. Especially, on Dec.17, provincial People’s Committee approved the project of “Improving the quality of population” with three sub-projects namely “Minimizing gender imbalance”, “Newborn screening” and “Healthcare before marriage” between 2011 and 2015 with a total expense of VND4.75bln from the provincial budget and VND13.8bln from the central budget.

So far, the sub project of “Minimizing gender imbalance” has been implemented in 59 communes and wards of the province with 30 clubs established. The sub project of “Newborn screening” has been implemented in 30 communes and wards while the sub project of “Healthcare before marriage” has consulted and provided medical check-ups for 260 young people who are preparing for getting married in TDM town

Challenges

Currently, Binh Duong province has a young population, which is the opportunity on “an abundant workforce” for the province. But, this also puts a great change on employment and social welfare. Young workforce needs to be sufficiently educated and provided job opportunities as well as knowledge about population-reproductive health.

Other challenge is the gender imbalance at birth. The actual statistics show there has been a decrease in the ratio of 119.7 boys to 100 girls in the year 2010 to 111 boys to 100 in 2011. But, this unbalanced trend will affect the population structure in the future.

Nguyen Thi Thanh Hoi, director of provincial Population-Family Planning Department said that in addition to providing financial support, regular and deep instructions for the health and population sectors, provincial authorities at all levels need to promulgate policies giving priority to women in terms of learning, employment, healthcare….They also need to pay more attention to families with all children who are female.

Apartedly, the population-family planning work also needs to be socialized to successfully make the project of “Improving the quality of population”…
