Doctor of little hearts
Dr. Khang has been dedicated to the field of cardiovascular surgery since his early days at University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City. Over nearly two decades, he has tirelessly treated thousands of patients, particularly children with congenital heart disease. Reflecting on the past 18 years, few can fully appreciate the concerns he has faced while witnessing so many children in need of heart surgery, yet lacking the means to receive timely treatment.
When Dr. Khang began his career, the hospital's cardiac surgery department was not specialized for children. After studying adult heart surgery in France, he remained deeply concerned about the congenital heart disease cases in children that were still untreated. His love for children drove him to return to France in 2009 to further his studies in pediatric heart surgery. Dr. Khang shared, “Every day, as I see children with heart disease and their immature hearts waiting to be revived, I feel an urgent need to act; there can be no more delay.”
This dedication has inspired the Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital to develop a comprehensive professional plan that encompasses human resources, technology, and infrastructure. By 2020, the pediatric heart surgery department was officially established. This achievement is not only the result of a team of doctors but also a testament to Dr. Khang's steadfast belief and silent dedication over many years. Thanks to their efforts, Dr. Khang and his colleagues have saved the lives of many children suffering from congenital heart disease.
From hospital to community
Dr. Cao Dang Khang is not only a skilled doctor in his field but also an inspiring figure in community and organizational activities. While he primarily works in Ho Chi Minh City, Dr. Khang always keeps his hometown of Di An close to his heart, viewing his contributions to local initiatives as a joy and a way to express gratitude to his roots.
In 2024, Dr. Khang was honored to be recognized as an honorary member of the Vietnam Women's Union. This recognition is significant, as it underscores the important role men play in supporting women in community activities and health care. Initially surprised by the invitation, given that he is a man, Dr. Khang enthusiastically accepted it after learning about the importance of advocating for women's involvement in these areas.
Soon after becoming an honorary member, Dr. Khang took action. He collaborated with Women's Union of Di An City to organize free medical examinations and health consultations specifically for women facing challenges, including female workers in boarding houses. With a compassionate spirit, he provided over 1,000 free medical examination and treatment vouchers to underserved women in Di An. Furthermore, Dr. Khang plans to establish long-term partnerships with doctors and experts from Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong to offer consultation sessions and health education focused on critical issues such as cardiovascular health, reproductive health, and other chronic diseases.

Take specific actions
The spirit of patriotic emulation is expressed not only through words or titles but also through concrete actions and unwavering dedication to work and the community. Dr. Khang embodies the image of a doctor committed to his profession. He is an honorary member who consistently leads in volunteer activities and prioritizes community health.
Dr. Khang actively participates in local emulation movements and inspires the younger generation aspiring to wear a white coat. He believes that the spirit of patriotic emulation in the medical field should be demonstrated through continuous learning and the enhancement of professional skills, all while serving the community—especially the disadvantaged and those without access to healthcare.
Through his noble deeds and tireless commitment, Dr. Cao Dang Khang exemplifies the ideals of the patriotic emulation movement. His journey spans from the heart surgery room to medical examinations at boarding houses, from the brightness of the operating room to the smiles of children. His actions reflect gratitude toward his homeland and a sense of community responsibility, painting a portrait of a doctor who excels in his profession and radiates compassion, inspiring everyone around him.
