Journalism – a helping hand in environment protection activities

Milk is dumped in to a rubbish site.

Over 75% of information coverage is supplied by journalists, confirmed an in-depth survey of the public. Journalism could promote its role close to people and environment for the sake of sustainable development strategy.

Journalists have spoken for life with too much pollution by uncovering cases of disposals that affected environment including the most serious case of Vedan Company. One journalist from Tay Ninh put it that pollution is inevitable during industrialization and urbanization process and environment issues become everyone’s concern. In information perspective, journalists see their social duties in propaganda for enhancing environment protection awareness and denouncing behaviors affecting environment. However, what concerns them much was the bounding of information administration while environment issues have no boundaries.

Vice Chief of Journalist Devision under Central government’s Propaganda and Education Dao Huy Lung assesses that journalism has contributed to environment protection but Party’s newspapers are more reluctant than others agencies. He noted that effectiveness lie in widespread information that require Party’s newspapers to improve.

Propaganda has been enhanced in terms of public awareness to improve State’s administration of natural resources and environment for sustainable development and higher living standards.

Majority of local newspapers cooperates with Department of Natural Resources and Environment to increase propaganda through the mass media. Movements are launched including drive to substitute nylon bags with paper bags, “Saturdays of volunteers”, “Green Sunday”, etc.

However, violations are mainly from industrial activities that cause more public concerns. Therefore, connection between agencies is needed.

Director of Environment Training and Communication Center Tran Phong confirms that the closer people are to journalism, the more awareness of environment protection they will have.
