Along a bendy alley, we arrived at the house of Ms. Hoang Thi Hong Phuc, who is 61 years old and lives at Gia Bien hamlet, Tam Lap commune, Phu Giao district. It was a small house with nothing valuable but an old table and an altar of her late husband.

Ms. Phuc and image of her late husband Ms. Phuc was born in Phu Tho. Due to difficult life, her husband, 65-year-old Le Huy Hung, moved to Binh Duong province in 2000. They bought a small land beside a stream at Tam Lap, Phu giao district to live. Every day, they worked when someone hired, and they took advantage of free time to plant some crops for extra income. The couple was unlucky, their new-born child died, she could not bear a child any more. Their life was so poor, humdrum, but they encouraged each other to continue. “Despite difficult situation, we always reminded each other not to fall and must continue our life together”, Ms. Phuc said.In 2003, her husband passed away because of a medical accident. No children, no husband, sometimes she attempted to commit suicide. However, thanks to encouragement from her neighborhood, she continued her life. Her life is a series of misfortunes. In 2005, she got a lump on right hand and has it until now. Every day, she wandered around to find a work or collect dropped rubber latex to have money for her treatment and food. Currently, her illness is so serious that she can not take any employ. She walks daily around many rubber tree plots to collect latex and sell for VND20,000 – 30,000 per day. On days she gets a pain, she has to stay at home and expect helps from neighbors. Ms. Phuc said: “As doctors said, if I wanted to cure my illness, I had to take a surgery costing over VND10 mln. My life is so difficult that I have not ever dreamed of a surgery”.Head of Gia Bien hamlet Mr. Diep Van Hoa said: “Ms. Phuc has a difficult situation, she is a lonesome elder person and often sick. Furthermore, because of elderliness, she is not able to work, waits for supports from neighbors. Tam Lap commune’s People’s Committee built up and presented her a compassionate house in 2012, gave her insurances and allowances and mobilized contributions from surrounding people, but it was not enough. Thus, we are expecting more contributions from other individuals, organizations so that her life will be less difficult”.Reported by Thien Ly – Translated by Ngoc Huynh
