This statement was made by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan at an inauguration meeting in Hanoi on January 17.
The Director of the Institute, Professor Ngo Bao Chau, affirmed that January 17, 2012 is a historic milestone for the Vietnamese mathematics sector.
The quantity and quality of mathematics lecturers and researchers does not meet the current increasing demand. Vietnam only has 50 mathematics departments at its universities and academies and 150 researchers. The December 23, 2010 decision to establish the institute demonstrates the Government’s determination to realize the national key programme for developing mathematics.
Professor Chau said the Institute’s key task is to improve the capacity of mathematics research and teaching at universities and academies as well as promoting mathematics at schools and universities.
He said he hopes that in the future the Institute will work with other sectors to apply mathematics in real situations.
Deputy PM Nhan said that the Government has decided to spend more than US$20 million implementing the national mathematics programme over the next 10 years, aiming to developing the institute into an advanced scientific centre in Vietnam and the region.
The Institute will serve as a place for local and foreign mathematicians to meet and exchange experiences, Nhan said.
