Meeting marks Vietnam's Sea and Islands Week

A meeting was held in Vung Tau City on June 5 to mark Vietnam’s Sea and Islands Week from June 5-8, the World Environment Day (June 5) and World Oceans Day (June 8).

This year's Sea and Islands Week theme is “Vietnam will become more prosperous and stronger from the sea”, the World Environment Day’s theme is “Green economy: Does it include you” and the Oceans Day’s theme is “Youth: The next wave for change”. These themes require every citizen, especially young generation, to join hands to preserve and promote the value of sea and islands environment to serve the cause of national defence and development.

At the meeting, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment’s leader emphasized that every Vietnamese citizen, every organization or business should enhance their responsibility for protecting the environment, sea and islands.

Vietnam has more than 1 million sq.km of sea and continental shelf, more than 3,260km of coastline and over 3,000 archipelagos and islands. To tap the great potential of sea and islands, the Party’s resolution on Vietnam’s sea strategy regards the development of maritime economy as one of five breakthroughs in the national strategy for economic development from now until 2020 and beyond.

Ba Ria-Vung Tau province has led other localities in exploiting the sea and islands for economic growth. With its maritime economy holding large proportion in the provincial economic structure, it has been able to maintain high socio-economic growth in recent years.
