Museums enjoy a Tet upsurge

The first days of the Lunar New Year saw a greater number of people flock not only to entertainment venues, but also to museums.

The War Remnants Museum in District 3 was among the favorite destinations of both local residents and foreigners during their Tet holidays.

Huynh Ngoc Van, director of the museum, said that they were open since the first day of the Lunar New Year and welcomed about 1,000 visitors a day.

She said from the last day of the Year of the Buffalo to the third day of the Year of the Tiger 6,506 people visited the museum, of which 6,271 were foreigners.

US visitor Robert Degrate told the SGGP reporter: “This is my first visit to this place and also my first visit to the country. The wars were so tough, violent and cruel.  We much appreciate what the museum can bring to us. It not only brings back some memories about the war but also help us understand the true beauty of your country and your people.”

Meanwhile, the photo exhibition titled “Viet Nam – Chien Tranh va Hoa Binh” (Vietnam – War and Peace) by two Japanese photographers Ishikawa Bunyo and Goro Nakamura received a lot of attention from Korean visitors.

Another part of the museum, the outdoor displays featuring old tanks, war planes and helicopters attracted many local children for whom it was an opportunity to learn more about the country’s history.

Similar reports about increased number of visitors came in from the National Museum of Vietnamese History and Ho Chi Minh City Museum, both in District 1. The national museum was selling an average of 1,000 tickets a day to both local residents and foreigners while the city museum recorded 400-500 visitors a day during the first four days of the Lunar New Year.

Le Van Thu, public relations director of the city museum, expressed pleasure that it welcomed many young students during the holidays alongside the foreign visitors.
