Over the past time, Phuoc Vinh township’s Women’s Union in Phu Giao district actively promoted the campaign of “Women helping each other in economic development and escape from poverty” among officials and members, thereby contributing to decreasing the ratio of the local poor households.

Nguyen Ngoc Diep in Phuoc Vinh township’s quarter 5 is well-known as an outstanding woman in production and business. For many consecutive years, she won the title of “good farmer” with the model of growing orchid. Her orchid garden now brings her the monthly income of VND100million-VND400million. She is intending to expand her orchid garden to around 7,000 square meters. Noticeably, she is always ready to help other women develop this model.

To effectively realize the Project 295 on “Supporting women in vocational training and job creation between 2010 and 2015”, the township’s Women’s Union worked with the local Farmers’ Association to open 12 classes on sci-tech transfer with 285 participants; joined hands with the district’s Division of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs to organize vocational training classes on tapping rubber latex and cooking for party for 70 women. The orchid growing model of Nguyen Ngoc Diep was seen as one of typical economic models of the township’s Women’s Union over the past time.
Solidarity
Along with vocational training and job creation, the township’s Women’s Union mobilized officials and members to actively help each other in economic development through saving groups and support funds. Over the past five years, the association’s loan-rotating groups assisted 1,121 women to get more than VND1.76billion in loan. The association also effectively maintained 9 saving books for poor women and helped 59 women get VND106million in loan.
Under the emulation movements of “following Uncle Ho’s teachings in thrift practice” and “women helping each other in sustainable poverty reduction”, the township’s Women’s Union called for 985 well-off women to contribute more than VND135million, helping 63 needy ones develop home based business; disbursed VND100million in loan from the “saving program for poor women” for 25 members and coordinated with the Vietnam Bank for Social Policies’Phu Giao branch to disburse more than VND4.5billion in loan for 197 others.
Thanks to the attention and support of the township’s Women’s Union, officials and members got access to loans, effectively used them to rise up out of poverty and get rich. Not only being good in production and business, many local women, namely Nguyen Thi Thuong in quarter 4, Nguyen Thi Hanh in quarter 9, Le Thi Kiem in quarter 5…actively helped others rise up out of poverty. This contributed to reducing the number of the local poor households as of late 2015 to 6.
