Radio broadcasting role highlighted at Asia conference

Radio broadcasting proves itself to be one of the most effective means of information dissemination, contributing significantly to national and global development, says Vietnamese PM Nguyen Tan Dung. Dung made the remarks in his opening keynote speech at the 2013 RadioAsia Conference, which opened in Hanoi on July 29. He affirmed that the rapid development of information technology, particularly digital technology, and social media has given the public greater access to diverse sources of information, gradually changing the media landscape in each nation and the world as a whole. This, on the one hand, creates an opportunity for the development of all media platforms, yet on the other hand, poses numerous challenges requiring media workers to be more dynamic, creative and cooperative to meet the society’s increasing demand, he noted. Dung spoke highly of the achievements Radio the Voice of Vietnam (VOV), one of the two organizers of the conference, has made over the years, saying VOV is a popular and reliable media agency in Vietnam. “VOV has been developing steadily, contributing remarkably to national liberation, defence, construction and development,” he stated. VOV Director General Nguyen Dang Tien highlighted the significance of the conference themed “Radio and Media – Where to next”. “Radio Asia 2013 serves as a special forum for broadcasters to share their experiences and perspectives on various aspects of radio broadcasting in order to work out orientations for the industry amidst the rapid development of information technology and social media,” he said. He revealed that in recent years VOV has fostered innovations and launched a series of media products serving a wide range of audiences inside and outside the country, including VOV traffic channel, VOVworld, and radiovietnam.vn. “VOV has adopted and taken advantage of social networks to diversify its programming,” he added. VOV and the Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU) are co-hosting the three-day conference. Participants will discuss urgent issues facing the radio broadcasting industry in Vietnam and the rest of the region such as: Radio on the Move: A New Era Dawns; A New Dimension of Radio; Killer Apps for Radio; Interacting with the 'Connected' Audience; Storytelling and the “On-air” Imagination; Folklore in Vietnamese Radio; and Radio: The Private Realm” Cute Producer - Creative Listener”.
