Raising public awareness of power saving

In response to the Earth Hour campaign 2016 themed “Small actions, big significance”, provincial Youth Union and Binh Duong Electricity Company have jointly organized plenty of practical and meaningful activities from Mar.14 to 19, thereby contributing to raising awareness of power saving  and environmental protection among locals, especially youngsters.

Small actions…

Early Mar.14, more than 60 Youth Union members participated in a parade through TDM city’s main streets by bicycles to call on all people to join hands in power saving and environmental protection. They also delivered leaflets mobilizing enterprises and households to switch off non-essential lights.

Despite hot weather, they stood at crossroads on main streets in the province to mobilize motorbike drivers to turn off engines when waiting for more than 20 seconds before red lights to reduce gas emissions. They also actively made dissemination of information about this year’s Earth Hour campaign in public places.

Especially, on the evening of Mar.19, provincial Youth Union will kick off a program in response to the Earth Hour at the city’s six-way crossroads, with the participation of more than 1,000 Youth Union members. The program will take place with significant activities, including a booth on face painting with the symbol of the Earth Hour; a recycled fashion show; art performances in response to the Earth Hour campaign…

Pham Hong Thang, Vice-Secretary of provincial Youth Union said that the Earth Hour campaign has aimed to raise public awareness of activities to save power, protect the environment and combat climate change. With such significance, all activities propagandizing the campaign from provincial to grassroots levels have been taken place very vividly and effectively, absorbing involvement of Youth Union members and locals.

…Big significance

Also thanks to participating in activities in response to the Earth Hour campaign, the local youngsters’ awareness of power saving has been raised. Vo Thi Tuong Van, student of Thu Dau Mot University said: “This is a practical activity, calling on all people to raise their awareness of energy saving, environmental protection. We will greatly contribute to protecting the environment by simple actions such as turning off non-essential lights and electrical appliances. I also understood more about using power effectively, economically and will remind my relatives to do this”.

Switching off non-essential lights is a very meaningful action, so it has received enthusiastic response from locals and enterprises, thereby contributing to helping the province save power. In 2013, the province saved nearly 210 mln kWh of power. The figure amounted to nearly 222 mln kWh of power in 2014 and nearly 254 mln kWh of power in 2015.

Over the past time, Binh Duong Electricity Company also hung, delivered thousands of propaganda leaflets on power saving; teamed up with press agencies to make propaganda activities to help locals know more about the benefit of using electrical appliances economically and take part in responding to the Earth Hour.

Le Minh Quoc Viet, Deputy Director of Binh Duong Electricity Company said that over the past time, the company’s power saving programs received much attention from leaders of the local authorities at all levels and Southern Power Corporation, especially enthusiastic response from locals. For better results, the company will continue propagandizing and mobilizing locals to use and install energy saving appliances in production, business to ensure the effective and safe use of power.

The Earth Hour campaign was initiated and organized by the World Wildlife Fund in Sydney city, Australia in 2007, aiming to heighten power saving towards the reduction of carbon dioxide emission and raise public awareness of environmental protection. This year’s Hour Earth will take place on Mar.19 from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm with the theme of “Small actions-Big significance”. This is the eighth year Vietnam has officially responded to the event.
