Stories from a relief trip supporting people in central regions of Vietnam

Flood left behind tragic life to people in the central land. During the month of October and beginning of November, people in provinces of Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan suffered from loss without remedy.

In our relief trips to Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan, we visited families with deceased members. They live different lives but share pain of the loss. Mrs. Le Thi Khanh, 56, retold the incident in which her husband was swept away when the flood hit her area.

Gifts to support flood-hit victims.

Meanwhile, when recalling the death of his father, Mr. Nguyen Van Tam, 36, told in grief: “Nothing is more miserable than watching our father being swept away by the flood in vain”. He told us about the bad day when his younger brother accompanied him and his father on a small boat crossing the Cai River in Khanh Hoa Province. Torrent rains and big wind tumbled three of them into the water. They tried to save their father but the flood was so strong that the father let go off his hands after urging them to swim back to the bank. Four day later, they found his body a few kilometers downstream.

The flood water caused white loss to business of people in Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan concentrating on aquaculture production. On the flood peak, water in some places was 2 meter deep and swept away shrimps and salt farms. Household of Mr. Nguyen Binh at Phuong Hai, Ninh Hai, Ninh Thuan collapsed in the flood.

“We have 4 children but now everything was swiped out by the flood. I am now indebted with bank loans and do not know how to carry on,” he said in pain. In exchanging with Mr. Vo Ngoc Dien, who is Deputy Chairman of Ninh Hai Fatherland Front Committee, we know that people in this coastal area depend only on collecting wood and harvesting shell fish for daily life. However, the floods have dealt great damage. They even find it harder to recover business due to landslide. In Nha Trang City of Khanh Hoa Province, over 200ha of shrimps were lost due to the loss of torrential rains.

People are more worried about the days to come when they need more clothing before getting back to business while risks of cholera and other influenza diseases are becoming higher.

Meantime, in Nha Trang City, people are more worried about landslide from mountain sides. About 7 cases of landslide were reported in Nha Trang including Co Tien Mountain, San Mountain, and La San Hill.

This time relief from Binh Duong was cost over VND 1billion supporting people in Khanh Hoa and Ninh Thuan by 2,000 gifts to flood-hit areas. Mrs. Dao Thi Ngoc Nu, Chairman of Binh Duong Fatherland Front Committee, is committed to more relief trips to hand donation directly to people in the central land of Vietnam.
