Tet for the poor

A number of activities have been held to ensure a happy Tet for everyone including the poor.

Officials, social organizations, private and individuals have visited and delivered Tet gifts to poor people in disadvantaged areas.

Bac Kan province has approximately 32,000 poor households. Among them are many very poor, lonely elderly persons, and homeless orphans.

The provincial Fatherland Front and the Red Cross Society have presented Tet gifts to local poor people.

Nguyen Van Cuong, President of Bac Kan provincial Red Cross Society, said, “There are many poor people in the province. We have organized many fund raising activities to provide 7,000 gifts to the poor during Tet.”

In Thanh Hoa province, President of the Red Cross Society Trinh Thi Tiep said since last November, the organization has donated 40,000 Tet gifts worth more than VND16 billion to disadvantaged people.

She said, “The organization’s fund raising campaign for the poor and victims of Agent Orange has been very successful. We have delivered all the gifts from donors to the poor and they were very happy.”

Tran Thi Hong An, Vice President of the Vietnam Red Cross Society said a new campaign to ensure a happy Tet for the poor was launched this year.

She said, “This year, we diversified the Tet gifts. In addition to presenting cash and gifts, we also gave health insurance cards and built houses for the disadvantaged people. The Red Cross Society organized free health checkups and treatments, donated breeding cows to the poor and organized free performances nationwide. We hope that our drive will gain more success.”

A project to wrap square sticky rice cakes for disadvantaged and poor people attracted a number of young people.

1,000 square sticky rice cakes and 1,000 gifts have been given to social policy beneficiaries, poor people, and ethnic minority people in Dien Bien, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Quang Tri province.

Nguyen Thi Hang is a youth union member. She said, “This is a meaningful program. Though we cannot present the gifts in person, we hope that poor and disadvantaged people will have a warm and happy Tet.”

Many enterprises and industrial parks have also participated in these efforts. Pham Thi Van Anh, President of the Trade Union of the Canon Vietnam Company Limited says that the company will provide buses to take 22,000 workers home for Tet.

She said, “Previously, only 92% came back to work after Tet. But since started providing buses, the rate has increased to 99.5%.”

Ha Thi Sim, who works for the Nisei Electric Vietnam Company at Thang Long Industrial Park in Hanoi will use the company bus to return home for Tet.

She said, “I’m very happy to receive gifts and get free bus transportation home for Tet. It’s very convenient. I can also bring home my children with me. This is a great help for us.”

Efforts to ensure a happy Tet for the poor have been expanded nationwide and received a great response from the public, demonstrating the unity of the Vietnamese people.
