Thai Binh SOS Children’s Village inaugurated

A ceremony was held in Hoang Dieu district, in the northern province of Thai Binh, on January 21 to inaugurate an S.O.S Children’s Village, the 16th of its kind in Vietnam.

At the inauguration ceremony for the Thai Binh SOS Children’s Village

The village consists of 14 families taking care of 120-140 orphans and homeless children and a nursery school with six classes for 200 children. So far, the village has taken care of nearly 60 children in 11 families.

The project cost VND45.17 billion (US$2.15 million), with 50% funded by the PetroVietnam Drilling and Well Services Corporation and the remains from members of the International SOS Children’s Villages and other organisations and individuals.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs Pham Thi Hai Chuyen appreciated the sincere and efficient support from the International SOS Children’s Villages and domestic and foreign organisations and individuals in building the Thai Binh village.

The operation of the village is expected to bring a stable and safe life for its children and make it easier for them to integrate back into society.

It also contributes to reducing the number of abandoned, street and underprivileged children along with crime rates amongst children.

Since 1987, Vietnam has received over US$100 million in funding from the International SOS Children’s Village and nearly 3,800 orphans and homeless children have been cared for at the local SOS Children’s Villages in the country.

Vietnamese children are the third of 134 countries and territories worldwide to benefit from SOS village projects, following India and Brazil.
