Thai PM nominated for premiership in general election

The Palang Pracharat Party of Thailand has nominated Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha as one of its three candidates for the premiership in the general election on March 24.

Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-o-cha

Leader of the Palang Pracharat Party Uttama Savanayana and other members of this party met Prayuth Chan-o-cha at the governmental building to ask for his acceptance of the nomination.

Talking to the media after the meeting, Uttama cited Prayuth as saying that he will consider this invitation and give the answer on February 8 – the deadline for parties to provide the candidate list to the Election Commission.

Parties in Thailand can nominate up to three candidates for the premiership. The two other candidates of the Palang Pracharat Party are Deputy PM Somkid Jatusripitak and party leader Uttama Savanayana.

Last week, the Election Commission announced that the general election will be held on March 24 to restore civilian rule. This will be the first general election in the country since the military coup in 2014.

The election also attracts the Pheu Thai Party of ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra and the Democrat Party of former PM Abhisit Vejjajiva.

Last month, the Thai junta lifted a ban on political activities, allowing parties to organise election campaigns.
