M.A. Nguyen Thi Lien Thuong, Deputy Dean of Natural Resources and Environment Faculty of Thu Dau Mot University has successfully gained the cultivation of Cordyceps militaris on synthetic culture as the first-step success of her series of researches on cultivation of highly valuable medicinal fungi on artificial culture.

New Year delight

Cordyceps militaris is considered as one of the reputable medicines in the world for its contents of biologically active substances good to human health. Cordyceps militaris is literally called ‘winter worm, summer grass’ by the actual observation of the species. Ancient literature of China highly appreciates this kind of fungus for its high nutrition, health improvement and immunity boosting including its abilities of anti-bacteria, anti-virus, helping under-growing children, treatment support for lung diseases, active effects on sexual disorders, bad kidney, impontence, spermatorrhea, kidney function, back pains, knee numbness, coughing, anti-cancer, radioactive substance, prostatitis, and diabetes.

Cordyceps sp., a genus of ascomycete fungi of Cordycipitaceae family parasitic on insects has become subject of research concerns in the world. Cordyceps sp. has been successfully cultivated at industrial scale in China, Japan, South Korea, USA, and Malaysia. Of 750 species of Cordyceps sp., only Cordyceps sinensis, Cordyceps militaris, and Cordyceps takaomonata are of commercial trend and great market demands. Cordyceps militaris is of valuable medicinal value for its availability of large scale cultivation and production of active substances effective for treatment of cancer, anti-virus, anti-bacteria such as cordycepin (3’- deoxyadenosine C10H13N5O3), adenosine, and polysaccharide.

After 24 months of researching and by seedling support of professors in South Korea, making use of naturally separated samples, the researching team of Dr. Nguyen Thi Lien Thuong has succeeded in cultivating Cordyceps militaris on solid and liquid culture with supplementation of protein from worm, yeast, and plant in optimal conditions of humidity, light, temperature, and oxygen pressure. Through the testing time and repeating tests on the samples, Cordyceps militaris shows good growth with cordycepin index from 6 to 8 g/l.

Associate Professor, Doctor Nguyen Van Hiep, the Thu Dau Mot University President, said: “Success of Dr. Nguyen Thi Lien Thuong in cultivation of Cordyceps militaris delights us in the New Year, marking a step forward in scientific research development amongst instructors of Thu Dau Mot University. I believe that in the New Year, Thu Dau Mot University shall eye more success in researching and instructing, particularly in implementing researches in Dong Nam Bo Region to service socio-economic development of the province and the region.”

Devotion of a local of Binh Duong Province

In our nation, scientists have carried out the similar researches for a long time with bright results; however, the complicate cultivation requiring sophisticate investment into the technology prevents open cultivation of this kind of fungi to provide to the public majority. In the market, Cordyceps militaris is on sales; however, those products are mainly imported from China at very high prices without clear origin and quality.

As a local of Binh Duong Province, Dr. Nguyen Thi Lien Thuong, after defending her biological technology doctorate thesis in South Korea, returns for working at Thu Dau Mot University.

As a devotee to scientific researches and being supported by the university and Natural Resources and Environment Faculty, Dr. Nguyen Thi Lien Thuong is determined with her researches on medicinal materials with her co-workers in a hope to implement researches and large-scale cultivation of high medicinal and nutrition value fungi in Binh Duong Province.

The success of Cordyceps militaris cultivation is just a part of a researching series of applicable biology of Natural Resources and Environment Faculty; however, it is very inspiring for researching team of Dr. Nguyen Thi Lien Thuong in a hope for popular cultivation of this kind of fungus in a bid to reduce product prices and transfer the cultivation technology to the public.
