Thuan Giao commune positively involves in fighting domestic violence

To protect legitimate rights and interests for women, since the Law on Domestic Violence takes effect, Thuan An district’s Thuan Giao commune Women Union’s members have boosted promulgations to members and local sisters, resulting in push back of family violence.

Mai Thi Phuong, chairwoman of Thuan Giao commune Women Union, said in 2009 alone the locality had 4 cases of domestic violence. The main reason was from husbands’ gamble, drunk and so on. The domestic violence cases triggered bad impacts on health and spirit for sisters. The union’s officials in cooperation with local mediation teams met victims’ husbands to give promulgations.

Mrs. L.T.Q in Hoa Lan II hamlet said she was used to send complaints to the union after violence caused by her ruthless husband. But now her husband regrets about his wrong-doings.

Thuan Giao commune Women Union’s members often meet sisters to help them.

Another woman named P said she had become desperate after having been turned down repeatedly when reporting the physical and mental anguish caused by her ruthless husband. The union’s members had to meet local policemen to help P, owing to non-cooperation from her husband. As a result, he had to pledge ending the violence.

Phuong said to reach high results in the work against domestic violence, promulgation is considered as a very crucial work. In the past year the union conducted 42 propagations with the participation of over 2,300 people. Besides, it distributed documents relating to family violence control to boarding houses.

Phuong shared many women dare not accuse their husbands’ ruthless deeds, so the role of grassroot officials is very important to minimize domestic violence. At present, the chairwoman and 5 heads of other affiliates are members of the mediation board.

The union in 2009 held contests relating to the Law on Family Violence with the participation of 18 contestants. Sisters should seek solutions to minimize family violence for the sake of family happy maintenance.
