Since the Government promulgated Project 32 to enhance social work in the period 2010-2020, this sector has achieved outstanding accomplishments. Staff and organizations of social work have recently been a mainstay to those with special circumstances, like: HIV patients, disabled persons, homeless children..., and helped them to overcome difficulties, regain confidence and integrate into society.
Raising awareness of social work
The country has now nearly 40 universities and colleges with annual enrollment of about 2,000 students for social work. Meanwhile, the faculty with doctoral and master's degrees are very few, only about 30-40 persons.
In addition, universities and colleges are facing a shortage of students for this profession. The reason is that this is a new field of study. On the other hand, social awareness of this profession is still limited. People often confuse social work with charitable work. some students are afraid to contact HIV patients, prostitutes, disabled persons, homeless children…

Helping people
To bring social work closer to students, universities have to disseminate this field of study, organize more practical activities for students to accumulate experiences, creating trust and love for this profession.
DRD Disabilities and Development Center’s Director MSc. Luu Thi Anh Loan said: “I noticed that social work in our country is still weak and inadequate. Therefore, training is necessary. Previously, when I had not studied social work, I just simply helped people. But after studying, I have known how to help people scientifically. Those devoting to social work are not only emotionally but also rational”.
TDMU’s Vice Principal Dr. Hoang Trong Quyen stressed: “TDMU constituted social work program based on expert’s opinions, social reality, focusing on actual activities so that students can have knowledge, skills, morality, and passion for this job. In the future, these students would become a professional team helping people with disabilities to integrate into the community”.
Today, people’s living standard is constantly improving, but there are still many people in society are faced with difficulties. Hopefully, social work would develop and prove itself to help building a society with full of kindness.
