In 2010, the Thu Dau Mot town’s movement of poverty reduction reaches remarkable progresses, winning nearly 110% of its entrusted targets. The achievement is thanks to efforts of poor households and specialized staffs…
Right from the early year, the town steering board of poverty reduction instructed agencies and mass bodies to disburse capital and job introduction for local poor families.

As for credit policy, as of late Oct. 2010, the local Bank for Social Policies disbursed more than VND9bil for 850 needy households. Besides, capital sources for privileged and disadvantaged families and students offered more than VND10bil for over 400 households.Especially, to help sisters escape poverty, the town Women Union effectively conducted a movement of women helping each other for poverty escape through various forms. As a result, 970 needy sisters enjoyed non-interest loans worth VND1.4bil in the past year. The town Women Union vice chairwoman Nguyen Thi Ha, said “the movement is one of 5 big programs of this union. We set out new models to help local women escape poverty”.
Efforts of poor households are a crucial issue in the program of poverty reduction. Therefore, mass bodies and organizations have offered training courses on production and business for the poor. Thanks to the assistance, many poor families have escaped poverty within 2-3 years.
Specifically, the town Economic Division in cooperation with local Farmers’ Society held a workshop themed “Orchards in attachment to eco-tourism development” for 45 officials and farmers. Besides, training classes on farming and species, co-held by the local Bureau of Plant Protection and the Southern districts Agro-Promotion Station offered useful knowledge for more than 1,000 participants.
Vocational training and job introduction are important factors in poverty reduction. The town opened vocational training classes for 100 rural laborers and demobees whilst local division of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs in cooperation with businesses introduced jobs for over 4,000 laborers.
The town has also boosted a movement of building hi-unity houses for the poor in a bid to stabilize life for them. In 2010, the locality built as many as 47 hi-unity houses worth VND1.3bil.
By such significant deeds, the locality in 2010 has 835 households escaping poverty, winning 110% of its proposed plan. The town now has 561 poverty households, accounting for 1.36%.
Nguyen Duong, head of local division of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, said the steering board would set out concrete solutions in 2011 with goals of preventing re-poverty for 835 families, offering capital and health insurance cards for 100% of poor households.
In terms of job placement, the locality will keep implementing projects of vocational training for rural laborers and demobees, introducing jobs to local laborers and mobilizing donors to help the poor.
