Tra Vinh works to improve Khmer people’s life

A series of policies and measures have been devised and implemented by authorities of the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh in recent years to further better the spiritual and material life of the Khmer people community .

Tra Vinh is home to nearly 328,000 Khmer people, accounting for 31.5 percent of the locality’s population.

Kien Ninh, head of the provincial Committee of Ethnic Affairs, said Tra Vinh has been allocated nearly 52 billion VND (2.24 million USD) from the central budget to build 76 infrastructure works in specially disadvantaged communes in line with the Government’s Programme 135.

Nearly 800 local households were supported in promoting production activities, diversifying livelihoods and expanding models for poverty reduction.

The locality is focusing on the disbursement of 9-billion-VND non-refundable assistance sourced from the Irish Government for the building of 10 infrastructure projects, expected to be completed in 2019.

The Social Policy Bank’s transaction offices in the province disbursed a total amount of 25 billion VND, helping nearly 800 local households access loans for their production development.

Khmer people in Tra Vinh have also benefited from many other policies, especially those related to legal assistance.

The provincial Party Committee and People’s Committee have also paid attention to preserving cultural value of Khmer people through organising traditional festivals.

By the end of 2018, Tra Vinh has only 16,000 poor household, a year-on-year decrease of 2.46 percent. Of which, it recorded a 4.4 percent decline of poor households in the Khmer people community.
