The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will continue to cooperate with the Government and people of Vietnam on sustainable development and green growth to ensure a more sustainable future for all, said Director Louis Chamberlain at a meeting held in the northern province of Vinh Phuc on June 5.
The event in response to the World Environment Day (June 5) was organised by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Vietnam Farmer’s Association and the Vietnam Association of the Elderly.
Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai said the national economic development path is based on efficiently utilising natural resources, fuel and energy.
Environmental protection has become a major challenge for the community, especially in rural areas and craft villages.
He called on individuals, organisations and businesses to make practical contributions to protecting the environment towards natural resource efficiency and sustainable development.
The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment called upon ministries, sectors and localities to promote consumption of environmentally-friendly products and increase awareness-raising campaigns.
A ceremony was held in the province on June 4 to present the Vietnam Environmental Awards 2015 to 50 organisations and individuals in recognition of their active contributions to environmental protection.
According to the UNDP, humanity is consuming more than the Earth can provide. Many of the global ecosystems are reaching critical points of depletion or nearing irreversible changes fueled by economic development and population growth.
If current consumption and production patterns remain and the population grows to its expected figure of 9.6 billion, three planets will be needed to sustain the current ways of living and consumption by 2050.
The 2015 World Environment Day themed “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care” aims to raise humankind’s awareness of responsible management of the planet’s natural resources.
