Vietnam defeats Cambodia 2-1 in friendly match

The Vietnam national football team, led by head coach Kim Sang-sik, put on an impressive display, securing a 2-1 victory over Cambodia in a friendly match at Go Dau Stadium, southern Binh Duong province on March 19.

Right from the start, Vietnam dictated the pace of the game, dominating possession and launching relentless attacks to put pressure on Cambodia’s defence. Meanwhile, the visitors opted for a defensive-counterattacking strategy, relying on aerial plays and quick transitions led by their naturalised players.

After attempts, Vietnam broke the deadlock in the 25th minute. Midfielder Nguyen Hai Long showcased his talent with a spectacular free kick from over 20 metres, curling the ball into the top corner beyond the reach of Cambodia’s goalkeeper.

The home side doubled their lead just 10 minutes later. A well-executed attack on the left wing allowed Van Vi to break into the box and slot home a precise finish, making it 2-0 before halftime.

In the second half, Cambodia adjusted their tactics, pushing higher up the field in search of a goal. Their determination paid off in the 64th minute, when Bong Samuel unleashed a powerful long-range strike from outside the penalty area, beating Vietnam’s goalkeeper and narrowing the score to 2-1.

As the match entered its final phase, both teams slowed the tempo, focusing on defensive solidity. Cambodia created a few dangerous opportunities, but Vietnam’s defence remained resolute, ensuring the 2-1 victory at full-time.

This win serves as a strong start for coach Kim, providing valuable insights into the squad ahead of upcoming official tournaments. It also boosts Vietnam’s confidence as they prepare for a crucial AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifier against Laos on March 25./.
