Vietnam pledges effective use of water resources

Vietnam is willing to share international experiences in management, exploitation, and use of water resources sustainably, especially in coping with floods and droughts.

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan reaffirmed Vietnam’s commitment at the 2nd Asia-Pacific Water Summit (2nd APWS) in Chiang Mai, Thailand, on May 20 which attracted more than 2,000 delegates from 50 nations and territories in the region.

Regional countries should join hands to address water scarcity and degradation, for the common prosperity, stability and safety of water resources in each country and the Asia-Pacific region as a whole, he said.

Nhan proposed ratifying the UN Convention on the Law of Non-Navigational Uses of International Water Resources, improving the efficiency of the signed agreements and conventions, and strengthening cooperation in sharing trans-border water resources on the principle of equality among nations.

Meanwhile, Thailand’s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra emphasized that the conference highlighted the necessity for flood prevention and water resources management in the wake of climate change, as well as international coordination to resolve water-related issues in the future.

She announced Thailand’s contribution of US$1 million to a US$10 million fund established to support research on water resource management in the region.

Delegates discussed hot issues relating to water resources, and food and economic security.
