Vietnam ready to help Japan overcome earthquake aftermath

Vietnam is ready to do whatever it can to help Iwate prefecture and other localities in Japan overcome the consequences of natural disasters.

This statement was made by Vietnamese ambassador to Japan Nguyen Phu Binh during his October 14-15 visit to Iwate prefecture, which suffered some of the worst damage as a result of the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that hit northeastern Japan in March.

At the meeting with the Iwate Governor Takuya Tasso, Mr Binh said he is very happy to see the prefecture's speedy recovery from the earthquake and tsunami.

He also briefed the Governor on the Hoa Dao (Peach Blossom) song and dance troupe’s tour in Japan that included performances in Iwate, Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures to show Vietnam’s solidarity and support for Japan’s efforts to deal with the consequences of the natural disasters.

Mr Tasso said he hopes the troupe’s tour will help promote mutual understanding and friendship between the two countries.

In a talk with leaders of Miyako city- one of the heavily affected areas in Iwate prefecture, Mr Binh said the Vietnamese Government and people will always stand side by side with Japan and he believes that the administration and people of Miyako will recover soon.

Miyako Deputy Governor Ichiro Nagoshi extended his thanks to Vietnam, stating that the March earthquake and tsunami swept away and collapsed 4,675 houses, leaving 500 people dead and hundreds others missing.

During his visit, Mr Binh also visited a temporary housing area for homeless evacuees and attended a tree-planting ceremony.
