Vietnam’s initial success in implementing MDGs

At the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) Annual Ministerial Review (AMR) in Geneva from July 1-4, Vietnam is one of three countries selected to share experience in national development process.

By 2012, Vietnam already fulfilled most of MDGs, reducing the poverty rate by half in 2002 and then down to 10.7% in 2010.

The country announced the completion of primary education universalisation as early as in 2000 and made great progress in ensuring gender equality, raising women’s position, and improving mother and child care.

Vietnam also made a major breakthrough in establishing global partnership for development, helping to mobilise foreign capital, support official development and seize trade liberlisation opportunities to promote economic growth and poverty reduction.

However, like other countries which have been seriously affected by climate change, Vietnam finds it difficult to fulfill the goal of ensuring environmental sustainability.

Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen The Phuong said 2013 is pivotal year for Vietnam as the UN is preparing for its development agenda after 2015. So far, the country has fulfilled three goals ahead of time and is trying to complete three other goals by 2015. It will spare no effort to implement the two remaining goals of ensuring environmental sustainability and preventing the spread of HIV.

While in Geneva, the Vietnamese delegation held many bilateral meetings with international delegations to share experience in implementing MDGs, through south-south cooperation, as well as in cooperating with the UN to prepare its development agenda after 2015.
