Voluntary blood donation movement is increasingly gaining momentum

The outcomes of the voluntary blood donation initiative in Binh Duong province in recent times have significantly enhanced the efforts to promote public health. This impactful movement is gaining momentum, drawing participation from a diverse array of individuals across various sectors.

The Voluntary Blood Donation Festival organized by Biwase drew a significant number of participants

To promote virtuous actions

Voluntary blood donation represents a key annual initiative of the Red Cross across all levels within the province. With the active involvement of Red Cross personnel, members, and volunteers, the voluntary blood donation movement in the province is experiencing significant growth and garnering widespread societal attention.

Recent records indicate that, in addition to localities, numerous companies and enterprises in the province have collaborated to organize various voluntary blood donation campaigns. For these organizations, voluntary blood donation is not merely an annual event; it also represents a commendable cultural hallmark imbued with humanity throughout their operations. A notable example is the Binh Duong Water and Environment Corporation (Biwase), which has successfully coordinated the Voluntary Blood Donation Festival 42 times to date.

In addition to the staff and employees from Biwase's affiliated units, each event organized also facilitates the participation of external volunteers in blood donation. Mr. Nguyen Phuong Toan, Secretary of Biwase's Youth Union, stated that this initiative is a longstanding tradition among the collective, youth union members, and employees across the company. Participants in voluntary blood donation are granted the opportunity to take a day off from work. Each affiliated unit also allocates funds to promote the spirit of those who engage in voluntary blood donation. "The significance of donating blood to save lives, coupled with timely recognition and encouragement, consistently attracts numerous staff and employees from the entire company to register for participation. Many individuals also motivate their relatives and friends to join in whenever the company organizes a festival," Mr. Nguyen Phuong Toan remarked.

Toan has donated blood 16 times to date. For him, this endeavor holds significant meaning, reflecting his commitment to society and the community, particularly in providing essential support to those in need of blood during their treatment.

For many years, voluntary blood donation has evolved into an annual tradition among the collective, union members, and youth in Biwase. Consequently, Biwase organizes voluntary blood donation events twice each year, in April and October. On average, each event mobilizes approximately 200 units of blood, thereby enhancing the reserve blood supply for emergencies and medical treatment, and significantly contributing to the province-wide voluntary blood donation movement.

In addition to Biwase, numerous companies, organizations, and educational institutions within the province engage in annual voluntary blood donation initiatives. When on-site organization is not feasible, they encourage their staff, employees, and workers to participate in blood donation campaigns coordinated by local authorities. As a result, in recent years, blood donation campaigns organized by the province and localities have garnered significant participation, with the number of blood units collected meeting and surpassing established targets.

The growing term

In promoting the nation's esteemed tradition of charity, numerous volunteers in the province have consistently demonstrated their willingness to unite, share, and donate blood to provide life-saving support to countless patients.

According to data from the Provincial Red Cross Society, in 2024, the entire association collaborated with the Cho Ray Blood Transfusion Center in Ho Chi Minh City to conduct 94 voluntary blood donation campaigns, engaging over 28,000 volunteers. As a result, 27,000 units of blood were collected, achieving 131% of the target set for 2024 by the National Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation.

The volume of blood collected from volunteers in the province has significantly enhanced the availability of this vital resource for hospitals and medical facilities. Remarkably, the percentage of repeat blood donors last year reached 88%. Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Deputy Director of the Vietnam Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development - Thu Dau Mot Branch, is among these repeat donors. He expressed that he finds this initiative meaningful, which has motivated him to participate annually in recent years, resulting in a total of eight donations to date. “Those who have not yet participated should consider doing so at least once. After the initial experience, subsequent donations will undoubtedly be easier. There is no cause for concern. Voluntary blood donation also enriches the general blood bank, aiding those in need and ultimately saving lives, making it profoundly significant. I will continue to participate and work to promote this initiative in the future,” stated Mr. Phuc.

In the early months of 2025, blood donation drives continued to be organized by the Provincial Voluntary Blood Donation Steering Committee, along with various districts and cities, drawing a significant number of volunteers. The leader of the Provincial Red Cross Society reported that since the start of the year, the province has conducted 22 voluntary blood donation drives, collecting 9,480 out of the 25,800 blood units targeted for the year, achieving 36.7% of the goal. Notably, during the voluntary blood donation program for Tet (from January 1 to March 1), 10 drives were held, yielding 3,860 out of 5,160 blood units, thereby reaching 75% of the assigned target.

In recognition of their accomplishments, the Provincial Red Cross Society—serving as the Standing Agency of the Provincial Steering Committee for Voluntary Blood Donation—along with the following units: Thu Dau Mot City, Thuan An City, Dau Tieng District, Phu Giao District, and Bau Bang District, received certificates of merit from the Cho Ray Blood Transfusion Center for their exemplary efforts in promoting and mobilizing voluntary blood donation in 2024.

Binh Duong provincial Voluntary Blood Donation Steering Committee has directed its member agencies, along with the Voluntary Blood Donation Steering Committees of districts and cities, to carry out activities in observance of "National Voluntary Blood Donation Day" (April 7) this year. This initiative aims to enhance awareness among cadres, civil servants, public employees, workers, and citizens from all sectors of the province regarding the purpose and noble significance of "Donating blood to save lives."

From April 1 to May 31, 2025, the entire province will coordinate blood mobilization and collection efforts to achieve a minimum of 15% of the target set for 2025, ensuring that the blood supply meets the demands for emergencies and patient care.
