This Tet, the family of Nguyen Van Thanh living in hamlet 5, Chanh Phu Hoa commune, Ben Cat district is very joyful as his family last year escaped from poverty. He said that thanks to the local government’s attention and help, his family has tried to rise out of poverty and secured a stable life.
Thanh’s family now has a farm of 50 pigs and supplies between 50 and 60 liters alcohol for eateries every day, securing an average income of more than VND50mln a year. Thanh hopes: “In the next years, my family will make more efforts to become one of the local rich households”.
Well-off spring
In early 2010, Binh Duong had 7,417 poor households or 3.53% of total. There were 3,044 poor households as of October 2010 or 1.38% of total and around 4,377 households near poverty. Thus, the number of poor households in the province reduced by 4,377 in 2010.
Between 2006 and 2010, the whole province had around 22,211 households escaping from poverty and securing a stable life. So far, the province has basically fulfilled the set targets on hunger eradication and poverty reduction under the resolution set out by provincial Party Committee.
Poor households in the province have enjoyed favorable conditions to get access to social services, contributing to improving their lives. Ninh Quoc Binh, deputy director of provincial Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs said: “The national target program for hunger eradication and poverty reduction in the province has entered a new period with many measures that are suitable to the local real situation”.
The province’s proposed poverty line in the 2010 and 2015 period is a monthly income of less than VND800,000 per person in rural areas and below VND1mln per person in urban areas. Under the poverty line, the whole province will have around 15,037 poor households and 6,015 households near poverty. The province will strive to reduce by 1.5% of the rate of poor households every year. Thus, the province will have no more poor households by 2015 under the new poverty line.
