A ceremony was held in Con Co island district, central Quang Tri province on June 8 to kick off construction on a kindergarten and primary school on the island.
The Hoa Phong Ba School , the only one on the island, is expected to be put into use in the 2014-2015 academic year.
The school is designed to cover a total area of 1,800 sq.m. The first section will be built at a cost of 5 billion VND, with classrooms for pre-school and primary students, houses for teachers, a kitchen and other subsidiary works on an area of 400 sq.m.
Speaking at the function, Minister of Education and Training Pham Vu Luan said that the school will meet the demand for education on the island.
Con Co Island , nearly 30 km off Cua Tung beach, covers just 2.5 sq.km. It boasts potential for ecological and marine tourism thanks to its tropical marine ecosystems.
First incorporated in April 2005, the district of Con Co now has dozens of households making a living mainly from fishing. Earlier, all children on the island had to go to the mainland for education.
