The money will support the implementation of Vietnam’s Higher Education Reform Agenda and improve school readiness for 5-year-old children.
WB Vietnam Country Director Victoria Kwakwa said, “Improving the population’s education outcomes is an important part of Vietnam’s economic and social development agenda, and has been defined as one of the three breakthrough areas in its Socio-Economic Development Strategy for 2011–2020.”
“The World Bank is pleased to support the strengthening of Vietnam’s education sector to help raise Vietnam’s economic competitiveness,” she added.
The Higher Education Development Policy Operations 3 specifies US$50 million will be used in the implementation of policies designed to strengthen the governance, financing, and quality of higher education. This is the third credit in this series of operations.
The Vietnam School Readiness Promotion Project (SRPP) aims to ensure children entering primary education are adequately prepared—particularly those deemed vulnerable to difficulties adjusting to formal school environments.
It will support selected elements of Vietnam's national program on Universal Early Childhood Education for 5-Year-Old Children 2010–2015 (Decision 239).
The project targets expanding full-day preschool enrollments, improving preschool quality assurance capacity, and developing the professional expertise of teachers and principals.
The funding credits come from the International Development Association, the World Bank Group’s concessional lending window for low income countries.
