In 2009, Mai The He started breeding Sao chicken. After 3 years, his Sao chicken herd brings him hundreds of millions of VND. From the success, He shifted to raise other strange animals such as varan, Tragulus javanicus, etc.
Based on accumulated information, He realizes that varan is a kind of animal bringing high economic value, so in the late of 2011 he started building a varan farm. He said that varan is suitable to climate in Binh Duong province and its food source is easy to look for. Its most favorite food is frog, innards of other animals.
He added that varan can fast within one week. To help varan gain a good weight of about 1kg per year, every 2 days varan should be fed up one time. A mature varan can be 2.5-3 meters in length and over 10kg in weight.
At present, He has raised 9 varans, 2 of which are going to give birth. He added that he has reaped more than 10mil from selling meat of varan. This animal’s meat is priced at VND420,000-450,000 per kg. With this price, he affirms that varan breeding is a high economic model.
Aside from breeding varan, He has managed to raise Tragulus javanicus. This kind of animal’s food is mainly vegetables and fruits. In the trial stage, his Tragulus javanicus herd has showed that they have been developed well. In the coming time, he will raise frog to offer food source for his varan herd.
He revealed, varan and Tragulus javanicus are animals bringing high economic efficiency and consumption source for these animals are very huge, so functional agencies should facilitate farmers’ production expansion.
