Agricultural development towards high-tech application

With the goal of improving products’ quality, increasing the competitiveness of the local agricultural products and creating a high income source for farmers, Binh Duong has implemented agricultural restructuring towards increasing value and developing hi-tech based agriculture. The province aims at bringing the proportion of agricultural production value with high technology application to over 30%. The province’s area of agricultural land at GAP standards accounts for 20% of total while the number of livestock farms granted the Good Animal Husbandry Practice (GAHP) certification accounts for 30% of total by 2025.

Positive results

Clearly identifying the importance of science and technology to the development of agriculture, over the past time, Binh Duong has issued many plans and schemes to restructure the local cultivation sector towards hi-tech agricultural models such as biotechnology, greenhouse technology, drip irrigation technology, sensor technology, automation, internet of things... into production in order to shift focus from output to quality and efficiency.

The province has implemented lots of development policies, attracting many businesses and farmers to boldly invest in production, develop areas specializing in rubber trees, specialty fruit trees, safe vegetables in association with processing and consumption along the value chain; promoted the application of high-yield and high-quality, pest-resistant varieties for key crops such as rubber, pepper, banana, netted muskmelon, citrus fruit trees, vegetables..., thereby increasing the lives of rural people, greatly contributing to the local socio-economic development. Up to now, the province’s area of hi-tech application in cultivation has reached about 5,763.5 hectares with valuable crops such as vegetables, mushrooms, fruit trees, orchids, ornamental plants. Binh Duong now has 4 hi-tech agricultural parks in Tan Hiep and Phuoc Sang communes in Phu Giao district, Vinh Tan ward in Tan Uyen town, An Thai commune in Phu Giao district and Tien Hung area in North Tan Uyen district.

In addition to modernizing the local cultivation process, the province has also had a strong shift in animal husbandry sector with many hi-tech based farm models under the chain linkage, ensuring food safety and environmental hygiene, creating a supply chain with high economic value. Currently, the province is home to 3 large-scale high-tech animal husbandry projects, namely the 78.5-hectare Tien Hung Hi-tech Agricultural Park in North Tan Uyen district’s Hieu Liem commune; the 17.6-hectare High-tech Poultry Farm in Tan Uyen town’s Vinh Tan ward, invested by Ba Huan Co., Ltd.; High-tech dairy cow breeding area in Phu Giao district’s Tan Hiep and Phuoc Sang communes, invested by Binh Duong Agricultural Development Joint Stock Company with a total allocated area of 471.81 hectares. The breeding facility model is designed under high technology, fully automating stages such as harvesting, food processing, waste collection and treatment, milking, etc. In 2021 alone, the province’s hi-tech animal husbandry models continued being grown with 146 chicken farms with over 8.4 million heads, accounting for 65% of the total herd.

Digital transformation, e-commerce development

Entering a new phase, provincial People's Committee issued the Decision No. 3485/QD-UBND, dated 23-11-2020, "On restructuring the local agricultural sector in the period of 2021-2025, with orientation to 2030". For targets to 2025, the province will raise the production value of agriculture, forestry and fishery by 2.5% - 3% per year. The proportion of agricultural production value applying high technology will account for over 30% of total. The area of land for growing agricultural products at GAP standards will account for 20% of total. The number of livestock farms with good animal husbandry practice (GAHP) will account for 30% by 2025.

To contribute to improving the added value for the local agricultural products, increasing competitiveness, international integration towards sustainable agricultural development, according to Dr. Nguyen Viet Long, Director of provincial Department of Science and Technology, the key to Binh Duong's development is the creative application of the Resolution 26 of the Government in accordance with local circumstances, closely following the province's vision of building a smart city, thereby making an unique strategy strategic for agricultural development.

According to Dr. Nguyen Viet Long, in the coming time, Binh Duong needs to promote high-tech agricultural production, gradually building up the local organic agriculture. First of all, the province needs to focus on attracting, encouraging and supporting enterprises with long-standing production experience, large-scale farms with stable consumption sources to gradually convert to organic agricultural production, thereby helping form up effective production models, contributing to promoting, motivating and upgrading existing traditional agricultural production models. In addition, the province needs to set up a plan for agricultural digital transformation and e-commerce development; make model rural construction in association with smart village model.
