Mr. Phu is in his orchard
“Ever since I’ve been in Vietnam 10 years ago, I love gardening. It’s comfortable and relaxing although I do not have much time and conditions to follow my dream like now,” said Mr. Tran Van Phu
He started by clearing the waste land to prepare for his gardening. Borrowing 50% of his capital from the bank, he planted longan trees on his first 5 hectares of land; however, by 1999 and 2000, his orchard was hit by flood and he lost all his crop. The profits earned for years failed to help him recover the longan orchard.
He started over with other types of fruit such as orange, mandarin, mangosteen, and durian. Recently, he has earned VND 1 billion from the yields of 70 tons of orange, 20 tons of durian and mangosteen. Currently, he is working on special care to produce for the market in Tet holiday.
Beside the orchard, he could earn 500-600 million VND annually by tapping 12 hectares of rubber trees. He is also planting payaya and pumpkin which yielded over VND 500 million last year.
“People may say that casava may yield higher; however, I chose the payaya for this year for higher price and better crop,” he said.
Phu is expanding his farm work to husbandry. Working as a farmstead holder for Thailand Joint Stock Company, he is rearing over 1,400 swines to earn yearly VND 400 million. His farmstead is bounded with private physicians who are helping the herd avoid diseases.
“I am combining the models to exploit waste from husbandry to feed the trees. It’s very effective and could save your pocket,” he shared before revealing his intention to raise porcupine, trionychid turtle, panthon, and swiftlet.
Phu is getting rich by the models he has made for himself and transferred to many local people.
“I want to be a humble farmer with peaceful life. It’s very joyful to see other getting rich too. The achievements, to me, are not great but they please me for I am following dreams,” he said.
