Animal husbandry in “price storm”: Saving costs to maintain production

Breeders in Binh Duong now face great challenges in the current “price storm period. It is predicted that 2011 will be a difficult year for them…

Facing difficulties in price storm

In recent years, animal husbandry has become a strong field of Binh Duong’s agricultural sector. The model of animal husbandry under industrial formula is gradually upholding its advantages.

As of late 2010, the province’s animal husbandry sector reached VND643bln in production value, increasing by 4% compared to 2009 and accounting for 26.9% of the province’s agricultural structure. But, since early this year, the local breeders have encountered a lot of great barriers from the price storm.

Breeding households now face many difficulties

The price of pig now stands at VND3.4mln or VND3.5mln per quintal. With such price, pig breeders have still faced loss because of the input material price on sharp increase. They and other many breeders have continued encountering more hurdles before the last price hike in petrol and electricity.

According to the owners of animal feed agents, from October 2010 to February 2011, the prices of various animal feed have been adjusted many times. As of late February, the prices of various animal feed increased by VND40,000 or VND60,000 per 25-kg bag.

Efforts to maintain production

The province’s animal husbandry sector has over time faced many difficulties from diseases and price storm. But, the local breeders have still made efforts in maintaining production.

To redress the current difficulties, the local breeders need to take measures on biological safety and thrift practice for better development.
