Born and grown up on Bach Dang grapefruit islet in Tan Uyen district, but Duong Van Minh did not want to escape poverty by grapefruit growing work. Despite his family traditional work of growing grapefruit and methodical training on forestry major, he did not pay attention to growing grapefruit but business.
Duong Van
Minh desires to uphold grapefruit growing in Bach Dang
commune. However, he realized that he did not
gain successes from business. Even, he has possessed a big electric shop in
Bien Hoa city of Dong Nai
province.
Fortunately, his father was a grapefruit grower with many years of growing grapefruit. With 2,000sqm of land from inheritance, he has gradually grasped knowledge on grapefruit growing through talks from local farmers and started involving in the farming.
After renewing his grapefruit garden by a big capital, he decided to spend VND15mil to buy DAB fertilizer for taking care of his grapefruit trees. However, his grapefruit garden blossomed one flower only, owing to shortage of experience. In the later crops, he enjoyed a grapefruit garden with many fruits.
Success thanks to new techniques
Bach Dang communal People’s Committee reps often talk about Minh’s grapefruit garden, being considered as the most typical grapefruit garden in the locality.
Minh only grows local traditional grapefruit variety and seeks out new techniques for the cultivation. He plants tens of ginger trees surrounding grapefruit foots. “Fragrance of ginger will minimize epidemic diseases for grapefruit trees and I can reap several tons of ginger per year”.
After 10 years of growing grapefruit, Duong Van Minh now enjoys more than 100 grapefruit trees and reaps over VND100mil per year. However, his aspiration is to maintain the work in the locality forever. He said “Bach Dang grapefruit is very famous but if farmers do not know to apply new techniques in cultivation, Bach Dang grapefruit will not have enough capacity to compete with grapefruit variety from other areas”.
His wishes that Bach Dang grapefruit will be a hi-grade gift for Vietnamese people and overcome all other trademarks of grapefruit, so he often introduces new techniques for local farmers and mobilizes them not to quit the cultivation.
Therefore, he is now considered as the most advanced farmer in Bach Dang commune and represents for a new generation of grapefruit growers.
