Between 2000 and 2015, Ben Cat was one of the province’s poor districts and the local people mainly earned their living by farm doing. Thanks to the province’s attention and investment, Ben Cat district (now being Ben Cat town) has recently made spectacular changes in the local socio-economic development.
For 2010-2015 alone, Ben Cat town has quickly become the province’s top 3 industrial urban areas. The majority of locals did not get involved in farm doing any longer. They have mainly worked for town-based firms and taken part in trade-services. Thanks to this, the lives of the local people have been improved with the annual average income of VND62.8mln as of June 2015.
Breakthrough in industrial manufacture-services
In the 2010-2015 period, Ben Cat town has taken synchronous measures to promote the local industrial manufacture and trade-services.
The whole town is now home to 9 industrial parks with more than 57,000 hectares in total with the land tenancy rate of over 90%. Businesses’ strong investment in industrial manufacture has greatly contributed to the local socio-economic development.

Ben Cat town’s People’s Committee said that the town’s total industrial production value in the first half of the year was estimated at more than VND25trillion, a year-on-year increase of 15%. The town has also created advantageous conditions for economic sectors to get involved in the sector of trade-services, mainly in tourism, banking, essential goods trade…Thanks to this, the local sector of trade-services has continued reaping rapid growth.
In the town, Dai Nam tourism complex, Phu An ecological reserve, eco-recreational services along Thi Tinh, Saigon rivers…have step by step satisfied people’s demand for production, consumption, tourism, entertainment…The town now has 2 supermarkets and over 20,290 individual business households. The town’s total retail sales value of commodities and services in the first half of the year was more than VND3.8trillion, a year-on-year increase of 38%...
Growth quality improved
Possibly speaking, Ben Cat town’s synchronous development in terms of attracting investment, forming up industrial, urban and service zones like South Ben Cat urban zone, My Phuoc 1, 2, 3, 4 industrial zones together with main streets like Highway 13, DT741…have contributed to promoting the local industrial manufacture and services.
The town’s Party Committee has defined short and long-term orientations with a desire developing the locality into a land with breakthroughs. Accordingly, the town’s total production value as of late 2015 will increase by 17.5% compared to 2014. The local economy will also reach growth of 20% with a structure of 83.91% in industry, 15.43% in service and 0.66% in agriculture. The local total value of services will also rise by 34% and above…
For a long-term strategy, Ben Cat town will further improve the local quality of growth and build infrastructure facilities in a synchronous way. Till 2020, the town will have additional 6,000 hectares of land for industrial parks together with a solid waste treatment zone of 200 hectares to serve industrial-urban zones across the province. The town will also fulfill social housing projects for laborers, especially those working at industrial parks to ensure requirements of technical infrastructure at the local industrial and trade-services development; strive to become a third-class city by 2020.
However, according to Nguyen Hong Khanh, Chairman of Ben Cat town’s People’s Committee, the town has still faced shortcomings for change.
Economic achievements done by Ben Cat over the past time will be a foundation for the town to have more investment sources for development, greatly contributing to the province’s industrialization and modernization cause.
