Binh Duong bound for clean production and green development

In a bid to transform the model of green growth and sustainable development, Binh Duong has taken strong steps to realize the Net Zero goal by 2050, proactively bringing clean energy and renewable energy into the production process of enterprises. The province has committed to deeply participating in the process of bringing net emissions to zero, contributing to building up a sustainable future.

Building up a carbon credit market

Early January 18, Becamex IDC coordinated with the US consulate in Ho Chi Minh city to organize a seminar on "Vietnam - US cooperation towards Net Zero, saving energy and reducing emissions for sustainable industry”. The event was attended by Susan Burns, the US Consul General in Ho Chi Minh city; Mai Hung Dung, Member of provincial Party Standing Committee, Permanent Vice-Chairman of provincial People's Committee, leaders of a number of departments, sectors, agencies and more than 200 enterprises.

The conference attracts the participation of many leaders of domestic and foreign units and businesses

Speaking at the conference, Mrs. Susan Burns said that climate change is a global challenging issue. Vietnam has emerged as the region's industrial production center, with strong development in logistics, posing many challenges in environmental issues. Therefore, a better solution for industrial parks is needed, with the application of new technology and green production technology, reducing construction area and production costs for enterprises, contributing to efficiency in production and business, joining hands in protecting the environment and combating climate change...

“Vietnam is a country susceptible to the impacts and effects of climate change during the development process. The US and Vietnam have strong cooperation in implementing solutions to adapt to climate change, especially green and clean production. The workshop with the participation of leading US businesses is an opportunity to introduce clean, green production technologies at the needs of manufacturing industries", Mrs. Susan Burns said.

Agreeing with the above opinion, many experts and speakers also discussed enthusiastically while proposing important steps in the production process of enterprises in the face of increasingly strict requirements from global organizations and agencies on environmental protection. The issue of carbon neutral certificates is potential, opening up many opportunities for enterprises and people to participate in selling carbon credits for enterprises. However, the issue of selling carbon credits requires a legal framework and clear regulations to facilitate all participating parties, thereby promoting a healthy, potential carbon credit market for developing countries, including Vietnam.

Developing green industrial ecosystem

Sharing about the trend of developing green industrial park ecosystems, representative of Becamex IDC introduced the eco-industrial park model that the unit is currently focusing on building, focusing on green trees that can neutralize carbon, replacing concrete structures with works close to the natural environment, along with a rainwater reservoir system, creating landscape and balancing the ecological environment. Becamex IDC has also taken an important step when establishing PV Power Energy Company (Becamex - VSIP Power) to proactively develop clean energy sources, bringing renewable energy sources such as solar power to factories in the industrial parks. Along with that, Becamex IDC has implemented a plan to plant more than 1 million trees in industrial parks by 2030.

Speaking at the workshop, Mr. Dung said that countries are taking faster actions and have recognized the problem, especially in the energy story. For Vietnam, the goal set at COP26 is to achieve Net-Zero by 2050. This goal is considered very challenging, but on the other hand, it is a great opportunity for developing countries to transition to low-carbon production, adapting to climate change and sustainable growth. Binh Duong commits to deeply participating in the process of bringing net emissions to zero, with the desire to contribute to building a sustainable future for Vietnam in particular and the world in general.

Mr. Dung said that Binh Duong has reaped results from the industry - urban - service model towards a smart, ecological industrial model, based on the development philosophy of “Effective investment environment - Harmonious humane society - Active and constructive government”.

At the workshop, delegates discussed issues of industrial decarbonization, industrial energy efficiency and international financial support programs, green financing opportunities to promote sustainability in the manufacturing industries. Delegates also discussed clean energy technologies that support Vietnam's sustainable development in the manufacturing sector, focusing on energy saving technologies and decarbonization solutions.

Mai Hung Dung, Member of provincial Party Standing Committee, Permanent Vice-Chairman of provincial People's Committee: Binh Duong has developed a new ecosystem - a new development model, complementing the industrial-urban-service model, which is an ecosystem of innovation and science and technology; built smart industrial parks, smart, ecological and sustainable urban areas, taking sustainability as the focus, bringing industry to a higher segment, gradually building up a new economic development driving force to substitute for labor-intensive and land-intensive sectors; actively participated in the process towards net zero emissions by 2050 that the Government of Vietnam has committed.
Susan Burns, the US Consul General in Ho Chi Minh city: US companies are always looking for clean energy sources to participate in the production process. Factories must be strong in applying and changing production technologies with energy saving; apply rooftop solar energy, reduce emissions for industrial parks and save energy. The workshop is an opportunity for businesses in Binh Duong to access new technologies in clean, green production.
