Binh Duong builds up green and smart cities

Binh Duong is making efforts in building up a sustainable green ecosystem under the green growth model, developing smart cities, fostering innovation and improving the local people’s quality of life.

Building up green ecosystem

In the overall development of Binh Duong province, Thu Dau Mot (TDM) city is a central urban area. TDM city is also aiming at building up a "green and friendly city". To achieve this goal, the city has focused on planting and tending trees, greening urban areas. The city now has an urban green space ratio of 14.62 square meters per person, with approximately 44.47% of the city's total area covered in greenery. There are 121 parks managed by the city and wards, covering an area of 364.51 hectares, contributing to increasing urban green spaces and improving air quality.

Binh Duong new city will be the nucleus of the province's Innovation Region

In the first month of implementing the campaign to green urban areas, aiming at building up a "green and friendly city" for the 2024-2030 period, the city planted 189,304 out of the planned 360,000 trees, achieving 52.58% of the 2024 target. Nguyen Van Dong, Member of provincial Party Standing Committee and Secretary of TDM city’s Party Committee stated that various sectors and local authorities have been intensifying efforts to promote the movement of "Each person plants at least one tree each year". The city aims at creating a green, clean and beautiful living environment by 2030, improving air quality, reducing environmental pollution, lowering urban temperatures and mitigating the effect of urban heat island. This will promote the shift of the urban economic growth model towards green growth, gradually transforming TDM into a "green and griendly city" with a tree cover rate of 55% or more of the city's total area.

To build up a green, sustainable urban area and improve the local people’s quality of life, provincial People's Committee has recently issued provincial Urban Green Tree Project. Vo Hoang Ngan, Director of provincial Department of Construction stated that the Urban Green Tree Project is implemented to enhance the effectiveness of urban green parks, meeting the local residents’ needs for relaxation, recreation, health, labor recovery, etc., while contributing to environmental protection, landscape improvement, climate change adaptation and sustainable development across the province. The project also helps the province manage the local urbanization process in a sustainable way and improve the local urban quality.

Provincial Urban Green Tree Project sets a plan to achieve the target of public green space per capita by 2025, corresponding to 6-8 square meters per person for the inner-city areas of Thuan An, Di An, and Thu Dau Mot; and ≥ 8 square meters per person for Ben Cat, Tan Uyen and other urban areas. Each urban area will have public spaces, including parks, gardens, squares, community spaces and walking areas. Specifically, TDM will have ≥ 7 zones (corresponding to the first-class urban area); Thuan An, Di An, Ben Cat, Tan Uyen ≥ 6 zones (corresponding to the second-class urban areas); Bau Bang, Dau Tieng 4-5 zones (corresponding to the third, fourth urban areas) and other urban areas ≥ 2 zones (corresponding to the fourth and fifth  urban areas).

Developing smart cities, promoting innovation

According to provincial Plan for 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, Binh Duong will further develop smart, innovative, and globally integrated urban areas, with Binh Duong new city covering approximately 1,000 hectares as the core of the Innovation Region. Currently, many functional areas of Binh Duong new city have been built under the plan. A technology-based innovation and startup ecosystem is taking shape here to support training, research and development, commercialization and startups. It includes the Becamex Institute for Scientific and Technological Research and Development, Techlabs, Falabs, the Smart Manufacturing Center…

Binh Duong new city accommodates nearly one million residents. It features the Becamex Tokyu public bus system, shopping centers like Sora Gardens SC, Aeon, Hiraki food area…, well catering to the local residents' needs. Additionally, Binh Duong new city is home to provincial Convention and Exhibition Center where many important international conferences such as the Horasis Asia Meeting and the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF), are held, affirming Binh Duong's brand. In the coming years, Binh Duong new city will further develop into the province's innovation center. Bình Dương is ready for new and more remarkable breakthroughs in economic and social development, building up a civilized, prosperous and smart city.

Mai Hung Dung, Member of provincial Party Standing Committee and Permanent Vice Chairman of provincial People's Committee said that provincial plan to build up a smart city in Binh Duong from now until 2026 has continued affirming sustainability and green growth as the "key" to economic development. The Binh Duong Innovation Region Project will be the guiding strategy for the local development in the coming years.
