Binh Duong province to turn towards sustainable development - Part 2

Part 2 - Improving environmental protection capacity

In the period of 2016 and 2020, Binh Duong’s total expense for environmental protection is estimated at nearly VND13.23trillion. The province will put focus on improving the environment, raising the quality of people’s lives, contributing to successfully building a clean, beautiful and civilized Binh Duong city.

Absorbing investment selectively

According to provincial People’s Committee, the province will concentrate on 14 environmental protection projects between 2016 and 2020, including those of purchasing equipment to deal with environmental incidents caused by fire and exploitation; treating medical waste till 2020 and vision towards 2015; improving South Binh Duong water environment…with a total expense of nearly VND13.23trillion, including nearly VND7.62trillion from official development assistance (ODA) capital.

During the period, Binh Duong’s target is to further maintain the annual economic growth at 13.13%. Total population is estimated at 2.5mln people by 2020. The number of industrial parks in the province will amount to 31. Especially, Binh Duong will become a first-class city under the central control by 2020.

One of major tasks done by the province in environmental protection is to boost sci-tech application in management to enhance the local ability of environmental information monitoring, make a database on waste sources for timely treatment solutions.

Binh Duong will also give priority to developing high-tech and environmentally friendly industries; be determined not to grant licenses to production facilities without waste water treatment system. Industrial and residential parks are also not allowed to operate if not perfecting their technical infrastructure relating to the environment yet…

Proactive in combating climate change

To stabilize natural resources and minerals, according to leaders of provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment (DoNRE), the province is making efforts in fulfilling the local plan on mineral exploitation till 2020 while seriously implementing the exploitation, use and management of natural resources and minerals under the plan approved. The province will be determine to close down all mineral mines that are not developed under the local plan and take measures to restore landscapes after exploitation.

The province has also braced up hi-tech and urban agricultural models in association with processing industries while researching to make the shift of animal and plant structure, applying biotechnologies in agricultural production to be adaptable to climate change and minimize environmental pollution. According to Nguyen Hong Nguyen, Deputy Director of provincial DoNRE, one of the province’s major tasks in environmental protection is biodiversity conservation. The province has aimed at forest conservation, especially in Dau Tieng, Phu Giao and North Tan Uyen district. The province has also paid attention to biodiversity projects, including those for restoring and protecting the ecosystem of Lai Thieu orchards; developing Phu An bamboo village, Bach Dang pomelo village…

Under the spirit of the Resolution of the 10th provincial Party Congress for the 2015-2020 tenure, till 2020, Binh Duong will well fulfill targets on the environment to ensure sustainable and rapid development. Businesses will be supported to replace their production technologies by environmentally friendly ones. The province will also speed up propaganda work to raise people and cadres’ awareness of being proactive in restricting impacts from climate change.

Till 2020, Binh Duong will strive to reach 100% of industrial parks and compounds in operation with waste water treatment system; 70% of urban areas of fourth class and above with concentrated waste water treatment system; 95% of urban solid waste and 100% of medical waste collected and treated; 100% of residents in use of clean water…
