Binh Duong’s urban agriculture develops strongly

Provincial People’s Committee has just approved a report on the Project “Development of urban agriculture in the southern region of Binh Duong for the period of 2016-2020”, aiming to promote the local urban agriculture by many forms, fostering a sustainable value chain based on hi-tech application.

Good results

Currently, the province’s urban region has more than 500 households getting involved in animal husbandry and cultivation, mainly in TDM city, towns of Tan Uyen, Thuan An, Di An and Ben Cat.

The development of urban agricultural models in the province has gained good results. Provincial Ornamental Creature Association is a typical example for this. From their passion, members of the association have changed to developing models with hi-economic efficiency.

In recent years, there has been a vigorous development in terms of ornamental fish breeding in the province, bringing the annual income of hundreds of millions of dong to breeders like Pham Van Long in Di An town, Le Van Hue in Dau Tieng district…The whole province now has more than 3 hectares of fishpond and 5,000 ornamental fish aquarium, mainly in Dau Tieng district, Di An and Tan Uyen towns…

According to provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DoARD), the whole province is now home to around 130.5 hectares of land for urban agricultural production with main models of growing mushrooms, orchids, sprouting vegetables…There are also more than 400 breeding households with nearly 100 kinds of animals like snake, alligator, porcupine, ornamental fish... All have showed diversification in terms of urban agricultural forms and people’s keen intelligence in the shift of agricultural structure towards modernity in association with the local urban development.

Sustainable development guaranteed

Under the Project “Development of urban agriculture in the southern region of Binh Duong for the period of 2016-2020”, agriculture in the southern region of the province will be developed under hi-tech and urban agricultural models, contributing to shifting economic structure and well tapping existing urban resources. The objective of the project till 2020 is to reach more than VND3.78trillion in urban agricultural production in the southern region of the province; VND1.6billion in the value of products on one hectare of water surface area for aquaculture…

Nguyen Tan Binh, Director of provincial DoARD said that the province is now home to 4 hi-tech agricultural parks of nearly 1,000 hectares and more than 860 hectares of farming land with hi-tech application. Province-based new-style agricultural models have obtained initial efficiency, creating high incomes for farmers. In the period of 2016-2020, the province has strived to increase its value of agro-forestry and fisheries production by 2.5% a year under the Resolution of the provincial Party Congress for the 2015-2020 tenure. To achieve the above target, the province has also implemented preferential loans for farmers and investors so that they have more motivation for the local urban agricultural development.

Possibly speaking, the province’s agricultural sector is changing very positively towards hi-tech and urban agricultural models. The province’s effective implementation of support policies will also help the local agriculture reach sustainable development.
