Part 1: Rapidly growing urban areas Under the Program on provincial Urban Development in the 2010-2015 period and vision till 2020, Binh Duong has reaped achievements with the local urban image rapidly developed towards civilization and modernity.
Affirming role of a central city
So far, Binh Duong has fulfilled 14 out of 18 criteria of a first-class city and also become one of economic hubs in the southern key economic zone.
Thu Dau Mot has basically met a foundation of the first-class city and it together with Vung Tau, Bien Hoa, My Tho has played a role as development poles in the urban system of the southern key economic zone.

A glance of Binh Duong New City
The province’s urban complexion has also formed up under the local overall urban development plan. Accordingly, the province’s central urban areas include Thu Dau Mot, Ben Cat and Tan Uyen; urban areas in the southern region, Thuan An and Di An and satellite urban areas in the northern region, Dau Tieng, Phu Giao, North Tan Uyen and Bau Bang.
The birth of provincial Integrated Administration Center in Binh Duong New City has also step by step affirmed the role of a central city. Covering more than 1,000 hectares, Binh Duong New City has so far built and put many works like provincial Integrated Administration Center, provincial Exhibition-Convention Center, Eastern International University, Nguyen Khuyen high school…into operation.
Some large-scale projects have also been implemented in the new city. Noticeably, Japan’s Tokyu Group has spent US$1.2bln on building the Tokyu-Binh Duong garden city project.
Whilst, old urban areas in Thu Dau Mot, Thuan An, Di An, Ben Cat, Tan Uyen…are being upgraded. Some with large scale, including Goucoland complex, Aeon Binh Duong mall…have contributed to forming up the local urban architecture.
Moreover, the province’s urban areas have also become more attractive with some tourism projects along Saigon and Dong Nai rivers such as Green Eye Resort, Din Ky Resort…
The province has also reached good results in the new rural construction program. All 48 communes in the province have fulfilled their projects on new rural construction. Among them, 38 have been recognized as new rural communes, contributing to reshaping the local urban image towards urbanization.
Planning implemented in a synchronous way
Reportedly, Binh Duong carried out its urban planning in a synchronous way over the past time.
In the 2011-2015 period, 30 out of 41 wards approved their regional planning. There were 10 overall planning projects, 41 detailed planning projects, 4 technical infrastructure planning projects and 48 planning projects on new rural construction. The province also ratified its land using plan till 2020.
Nguyen Thanh Tai, Director of provincial Department of Construction said that the province’s management on urban planning and architecture has step by step gone into stability with regulations promulgated.
The province has so far fulfilled a task of upgrading Thu Dau Mot town into a second-class city, districts of Thuan An, Di An, Ben Cat and Tan Uyen into fourth-class cities. Di An has also met standards of a third-class city.
In addition, the province has focused on making investment in administration centers of Bau Bang and North Tan Uyen districts. Bau Bang urban area in Bau Bang district and Tan Thanh urban area in North Tan Uyen district have also been recognized as fifth-class cities.
Densely-populated areas like Long Hoa, Thanh Tuyen, An Lap, Minh Hoa, Minh Thanh in Dau Tieng district, Phuoc Vinh, Vinh Hoa in Phu Giao district are also receiving investment in order to form up new urban areas.
