According to the provincial People’s Committee’s report, the provincial agricultural production value in 2012 won around VND5,000bil, accounting for the small density in the local economy (3.8% of GDP, a 3.9% increase from 2011). In order to help local agriculture and rural area develop along with industry as well as restore craft villages, Binh Duong has positively launched implementation of rural trade planning till 2020.

Diversity of craft villages
With pride of traditional craft villages, the provincial leaders through many various stages have paid attention to issuing instructions and policies of investing and developing craft villages. Especially, implementing the Government’s Decree No.66/2006/ND-CP on developing rural trades, Binh Duong built the program of preserving and developing the provincial craft villages for the 2008-2010 period.
Marking the local traditional craft villages’ development, the provincial People’s Committee set out a decision of recognizing Tuong Binh Hiep craft village in Thu Dau Mot city as the provincial traditional craft village.
Experiencing common difficulties of the economy, Binh Duong provincial craft villages have faced many obstacles. Aside from Tuong Binh Hiep craft village, Binh Duong has yet to have any craft villages under recognition.
Though there remains shortage of recognition, Binh Duong now has 32 new craft villages, 9 traditional trades, 55 traditional craft villages according to the latest figure.
As many as 45,611 households and workshops have joined in 46 kinds of traditional trades, luring 103,182 laborers, reaching output value of VND4,802bil per year. The province now has 2 craft villages making paper cake in Phu An commune of Ben Cat district and Thanh An of Dau Tieng whilst trades of producing wooden shoe, cabinet, furniture have located mainly at Phu Tho, Chanh Nghia wards in Thu Dau Mot city, An Thanh ward in Thuan An town. Meanwhile, Lac An and Thuong Tan communes in Tan Uyen district, Di An town and Ben Cat district have developed rattan and bamboo article craft villages. Garment and textile craft villages have been focused at Dong Hoa commune in Di An town while piggy bank production has been located at Di An and Thuan An towns. Ceramics industry has been seen across Tan Uyen district and Thuan An town.
New planning with 12 priority projects
Implementing the Government’s decree on approving and managing overall planning on socio-economic development in 2011, the provincial department of Agriculture and Rural Development built the planning on agricultural and rural development in Binh Duong till 2020 and the planning was approved by the provincial People’s Committee according to decision No.3530/QD-UBND dated Nov. 14, 2011.

In addition, the provincial People’s Committee has oriented to develop 9 traditional trades including rattan and bamboo articles, utensil carpenter, wooden shoe, sculpture, lacquer, ceramics, piggy bank, paper cake.
Aside from the traditional trades, new trades and trades given priorities for development have been oriented and planned. They include farm produce processing, mechanics, apparel, construction, building material, transport, rattan and bamboo article, tourism service, boarding house business, horticulture, rubber latex processing, vegetable, fruit and mushroom processing, handicraft, motorbike repair, electronics and vocational training.
Especially, the provincial People’s Committee has ratified 12 programs, projects with priorities for development. They consist of project of building the provincial Center for traditional craft preservation and development, the program of tourism service at craft villages, the project of processing and preserving fruits and vegetables, the project of restoring and preserving rattan and bamboo article in Lac An commune, the project of preserving traditional ceramics sector in Hung Dinh commune, Thuan An town, the project of preserving and developing sculpture industry in Phu Tho ward, Thu Dau Mot city, the project of new wooden shoe craft village in My Phuoc township, the project of new apparel craft village in Tan Dong Hiep ward, Di An town and the project of building some policies for preserving and developing traditional trades.
