Cocoyam taro farming gives stable income

Making use of shallow land of 7,000 m2, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Trung, residing at Chanh Hung Hamlet of Hieu Liem Commune in North Tan Uyen District plants cocoyam taro (white spotted cocoyam) to develop his household business and earn. Mr. Trung is selecting seedlings for the next crop. Photo by D. Tuan. Trung started his farm from 2004 with beginning of 1,000 m2 with investment of VND 3 million to workers, seedlings, and fertilizers. After 3 months of planting, the farm gave him nearly 500kg of taro which cost VND 12,000 to 15,000 a kilo. Common merchants from Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Nai Province secured his monthly income of VND 6 million.Depending on the soil, cocoyam taro can be harvested from 9 to 12 months consecutively.“Comparing to other plants, cocoyam taro is easily grown and taken care of. The seedlings are for your own choice which cost lesser. Besides, planting and cultivation of cocoyam taro can make use of short-term and unskilled workers,” Trung said.Trung shared his experience growing cocoyam taro which should wether in 1 to 2 years of harvesting, leaving farmers time to replant.Upon knowing of his good practice, many have come and learn.
