Continue promotional programs to increase purchasing power after Tet

After the peak of this year Lunar New Year holiday, the supply of goods in the market is abundant and diverse, with stable prices. However, purchasing power at traditional markets and supermarkets has decreased compared to the Tet season.

Stable commodity market

According to Provincial Department of Industry and Trade, before, during and after Tet holiday 2025, businesses participating in market stabilization, goods supply businesses, and distribution systems have implemented many promotional programs, focusing on products serving Tet. In addition, Tet sales points and Tet markets combined with the program of bringing Vietnamese goods to rural areas help people access and fully purchase essential products for Tet.

Since the beginning of the year, the market has seen an abundance of goods, with no signs of imbalance in supply and demand or unusual price increases. Currently, purchasing power is lower than during the Tet holiday season; however, it has still increased notably compared to the same period last year, particularly in the e-commerce sector. Authorities have conducted inspections and taken prompt action against food processing and trading establishments that violated food safety and hygiene regulations, improperly preserved food, or failed to clearly display product prices…

Mr. Nguyen Phuong Dong, Director of Binh Duong Market Management Office, said that since the beginning of the year, the office has closely coordinated with departments, branches, and localities to inspect and monitor to prevent smuggled goods, products of unknown origin, counterfeit goods, and intellectual property infringement... Thereby promptly preventing and strictly handling acts of commercial fraud. “We are stepping up the fight against the trade and transportation of banned goods, smuggled goods, production and trading of counterfeit goods, poor quality goods, and goods of unknown origin to stabilize the market and protect consumer rights in the coming time,” said Mr. Nguyen Phuong Dong.

Continue promotions

Supermarkets and traditional markets currently demonstrate that purchasing power is stable, with the majority of consumers prioritizing the purchase of fresh food. Leaders of supermarkets in the province acknowledge that the domestic economy is still facing significant challenges due to the unpredictable developments in the global situation. These challenges, in turn, impact the production and business activities of enterprises as well as the purchasing power of consumers. However, supermarkets continue to make efforts to bring Vietnamese goods to the countryside, ensuring fresh and abundant sources of goods, and applying promotional programs to stimulate demand after Tet.

Namely, after Tet, Saigon Co.op's retail system in the province imported 10 tons of chicken along with other meat, fish, fruits, etc.; many products were discounted by 10-30% compared to market prices to stimulate consumer demand. GO! supermarket chain has simultaneously applied the programs "Import Festival", "Lantern Festival",... with prices reduced by 35-40%. To meet the shopping needs of the Full Moon Festival in lunar January, Central Retail Vietnam applies promotions, discounts up to 30% on vegetables, fruits, vegetarian food... and daily "shocking price" programs, weekend "shocking price" for fresh products.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Bich Van, representative of Central Retail Vietnam (the management unit of BigC, GO!, Tops Market supermarkets), said that in addition to applying a discount of up to 30% on food items for Tet Nguyen Tieu (Full Moon Festival of the first lunar month), consumers buying essential fresh products at Central Retail Vietnam supermarkets continue to receive an additional 10% discount on their bills, applied from the time the supermarket opens until 10:00 a.m. from Monday to Friday every week.

Supermarket chains such as MM Mega Market, LOTTE Mart, AEON Mall, WinMart, and WinMart+ are launching early spring promotion programs. Mr. Dinh Quang Khoi, Marketing Director of MM Mega Market, indicated that consumers are actively seeking promotions, discounts on products, and convenient payment options. To address this demand, retail businesses are planning to allocate their budgets in 2025 towards discount programs and direct promotions on products, while reducing marketing and communication expenses.

“The record high rate of promotional items in customers' shopping baskets during the recent Lunar New Year holiday clearly reflects current consumer trends and preferences. Businesses must adapt to these trends to develop effective strategies for attracting and retaining customers.”
