With the growing industrialization and urbanization, Binh Duong province is facing with concerns on environmental management. To improve this status, challenge of the local environmental management sector is very big, especially solid, medical and harmful waste managements.
A concerned situation
On surveys, the province discharges about 633 tons of urban solid waste and 883 tons of industrial solid waste per day. Industrial solid waste and harmful solid waste mostly appear in all production models in the locality. According to a common assessment, the work of solid waste management in the province remains many concerns with the rate of collection and treatment of about 81% only.
Inspections help excel environmental management.
Furthermore, though the locality has about 65 units and individuals involving in solid waste collection and transport, the operational quality of the units is not synchronous. Meanwhile, localities away from Nam Binh Duong waste treatment area such as Phu Giao, Tan Uyen, Dau Tieng dispose waste at local open-cast dumps.
Besides, only about 15.3% of industrial solid and harmful waste quantity has been collected and transported. It is a small figure. And, a question is raised that how remaining quantity of waste is solved? At present, only big businesses winning the standard of ISO: 9001:2000 and ISO 14000 pay attention to decreasing waste on the spot. However, the figure only accounts for 14.5% of total local businesses. Additionally, only 4 out of 13 units involving in industrial solid and harmful waste collection and treatment are located at the province.
Moreover, a linkage between capable and incapable units is conducted to transfer wastes. About 159 businesses relating to wasted material business involve in the work. If being managed well, the units will contribute to create efficiency for the solid waste management.
Management of medical waste remains cumbersome
The management of medical waste is in the same situation. At present, medical waste source from local 17 hospitals, 106 medical stations and clinics has accounted for 3,155kg per day, 612kg of which is harmful waste. However, technology of medical waste treatment at the hospitals has yet to have a perfect treatment system. This causes bad impacts on environment.
Besides, only 20% of clinics categorize medical wastes and only 35 of 106 medical stations and clinics transfer medical waste for the waste treatment units.
The above reality raises many challenges for the environmental management sector. Therefore, measures in conformity with environmental improvement at industrial parks and residential areas should be mapped out.
