Orchard of Tran Van Dong gives an abundant crop.
With the theme of “Lai Thieu – season of date”, the Lai Thieu fruit festival will attract 150 stalls of enterprises and include Southern opera festival, photo exhibition on Binh Duong tourism, Southern gastronomy and more. The main character of this festival is in Lai Thieu fruit specialty.
Leading us to orchard, Tran Van Dong, veteran of An Thanh ward, Thuan An town said “In the recent years, irrigation system has been improved significantly, so orchards in An Thanh ward have given abundant crops”.
On average, Dong reaps more than VND400,000 per day from selling fruits such as durian, mangosteen and more.
Meanwhile, at wards including Binh Nham, Hung Dinh and An Son commune, orchards have been recovered. At Cau Ngang tourism area in Binh Nham ward, hundreds of visitors from Dong Nai, HCMC, and more flock to the tourism site every day on fruit season.
Soil and climate conditions in Lai Thieu are suitable to many tropical fruits. In the previous years, owing to environment pollution, area of orchards in Lai Thieu was declined seriously. Facing this status, since 2010 local leaders have steered functional agencies to recover fame and economic profit of Lai Thieu orchards. Therefore, system of dike and canal has been invested and improved, making up a green and beautiful environment for orchards’ development.
At present, Thuan An town now has 1,238ha of mangosteen, 172ha of Lansium domesticum, 85ha of banana, 85ha of orange and mandarine and more and so on with the average capacity of 30 tons per ha and income of VND30-50mn per ha. In addition, orchards’ owners combine with business forms of coffee and restaurant to make up an income of hundreds of millions of dong per year.
This result is thanks to timely attention from all level authorities. Specifically, the provincial People’s Committee’s Decision No.45/2012/QĐ-UBND on issuing some policies of supporting and developing Binh Duong specialty orchards for the period of 2013-2016 has made up a positive signal for local farmers. Every farmer household enjoys VND5mn per ha of fertilizer fee, VND4mn per ha of canal dredging, 100% of support of new nursling and 100% of tech-science training and more.
In 2012, Center for Vietnam Record Book in cooperation with the Southern Institute of Orchard Research, Vietnam Association of Vietnam Orchard and Intellectual Property Bureau choose Lai Thieu mangosteen as the top 50 of the most famous fruits in Vietnam. In addition, registering brandname of Lai Thieu mangosteen enriches value of mangosteen gaderns, helping fruit growers develop and build trademark for some other specialty fruits such as grapefruit, guava and more.
Vo Anh Dung, an agricultural cadre of Hung Dinh ward People’s Committee said that the ward will offer the most delicious and freshest kinds of fruits to tourists at the 2015 Lai Thieu fruit festival.
In the coming time, Thuan An town will spur canal dredging and improve irrigation system to develop local orchards as well as build rural traffic network to cater for goods and farm produce transport to market.
