Di An City – A young city resilience

For several consecutive years, making impression by a strong development of socio-economic indicators, Di An City has become an attractive destination to investors and the majority workforce. Looking at Di An's prosperous and beautiful today, few people know that, just two decades ago, this area used to be a poor countryside with an agriculture-based economy comprised of fragmented and small production methods.

Song Than 1 industrial park symbolizes the rise of Di An City.

 Impetus from industry

After being re-established from Thuan An district (old) in 1999, Di An City has made a remarkable development. Over the past 20 years of construction, renovation and development, Di An district stood up and became a symbol of economic success by industrial parks and clusters.

After this success, industrial clusters and zones named Song Than 1 (1995) and Binh Duong (1997) appeared, then Di An City has now become an area that attracts large numbers of domestic and foreign investor. Specifically, this city has 6 industrial parks and 1 industrial cluster with a total area of nearly 800 hectares (accounting for 13% total area of the city - 6,010 hectares), attracting over 500 domestic and foreign investment projects with a total registered capital of more than 2.7 billion USD and nearly 10,000 billion VND.

Di An's success in investment attraction in concentrated industrial zones and clusters is clearly demonstrated with the occupancy rate of 100%. Representative of the City People's Committee said that since 2015, the selection and approval of investment projects in the city has changed. Accordingly, the city prioritizes investment projects that are innovative, apply scientific and technological advances with a high amount of gray matter, and especially guarantee environmental protection.

Although most industrial zones and clusters in Di An have been filled, the wave of investment in this area has continued to increase strongly in recent years. The best evidence for this is the emergence of more than 10,000 multi-sectoral manufacturing and business enterprises with a total initial registered capital estimated at VND131,000 billion in the city. Apart from projects in industrial zones and clusters, outside companies also contribute to creating jobs for about 250,000 workers.

Vo Anh Tuan, Vice Chairman of People's Committee of Di An City, said that in the past tenure, industrial production value of the city increased on average by 10.48% / year. Particularly in 2020, although being affected by the COVID-19, industrial production value of the city also reached VND 105,289 billion, a desirable figure for many localities. The surge and breakthrough in the formation, construction and development of centralized industrial zones and clusters have brought good results to Di An. The prosperity of this area is evident through average budget revenue of about 2,000 billion VND / year in 2015-2020 period; in 2020 alone, budget revenue reached over 3,000 billion VND.

A city of commerce and services

The push of concentrated industrial zones has attracted hundreds of thousands of expert and worker to live and work in Di An. The increase in population has stimulated many types of services here to grow. Since 2015, Di An has witnessed the appearance of a dynamically developing commercial and service city as a series of "giants" in fields of financial services - banking, shopping - consumption, intellectual - culinary etc. enter this market.

Besides the increase of different industries, especially logistics, Di An City has gradually formed bustling business areas. Streets of finance - banking, entertainment - cuisine, shopping - consumption etc. also emerged. Nguyen Huu Quang, a resident of Tan Dong Hiep ward, said previously when his family wanted to experience services, such as spas, movie theaters or shopping at supermarkets, they had to went to central districts of Ho Chi Minh City; but for the past 10 years, Di An has had all kinds of services to serve people demands. Mr. Nguyen said that in the area of 3km radius from his home, all needs and demands of his family are fully met.

At present, Di An city has now 1 shopping center, 3 supermarkets, 12 conventional markets, 60 convenience stores, and over 11,000 business households. Increase of the total retail sales of goods and service revenue is estimated at 40% / year on average, in 2020 alone Di An's total retail sales of goods reached 94,174 billion VND. To build up Di An city towards a dynamic commercial service city and maintain the growth pace, in the coming time, the City People's Committee will continue to implement a breakthrough program of high-quality trade and services until 2021 towards 2025 combined with industrial and modern development towards civilization and modernity until 2021.

Mr. Vo said that in the effort to build a smart, dynamic commercial and service city, with an economic structure of trade, service - industry - agriculture, the city strives to maintain growth value of trade and service industry at averagely 25% / year; industrial production increase by 10% / year on average; agricultural production value increase by 2% / year on average.
