At a recent conference with provinces in the southern key economic region, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc emphasized that this is a key area of the key areas. In terms of scale and contribution in the near future, it will be a mega-center of Southeast Asia, so it needs strong innovation and development to develop. In particular, promoting digital economy, inter-regional connectivity is a direction that needs to be focused. Recently, in addition to focusing on developing e-government, People's Committees of provinces and cities in the southern key economic region have focused on promoting e-commerce development. According to the report of the Vietnam E-Commerce Association, currently in the top 5 provinces and cities leading the E-commerce index (EBI), there are 2 provinces and cities in the southern key economic region, Ho Chi Minh and Binh Duong. In 2019, Binh Duong continues to be the 2nd World Smart City Community (ICF) voted as one of 21 cities and regions with the typical smart city development strategy of the world.
Besides, the southern key economic region has many advantages to develop the digital economy. The southern key economic region is not only a place with a high economic growth rate, focusing on industrial production of the whole country but also a system of leading universities, institutes and research centers, greatly facilitating the digital economic development. In 2018, the Ministry of Construction in collaboration with the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee together with the provinces and cities in the region chaired the conference to announce the adjustment of the construction planning of Ho Chi Minh City region to 2030, with a vision to 2050 with administrative boundaries of Ho Chi Minh City and 7 neighboring provinces: Dong Nai, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Binh Duong, Binh Phuoc, Long An, Tay Ninh, Tien Giang. The purpose of the plan is to build a modern economic region, a major economic center of the country and Southeast Asia, a center of commerce, finance, a center for scientific and service research.
