Born in a farming family, Nguyen Van Tuan experienced many models on cultivation and animal husbandry, but their economic efficiency was not high. Realizing the model of breeding dairy cows with hi-economic efficiency, he used his savings plus loan from his relatives to buy 4 dairy cows in order to foster the model in 2000.
In the initial period of developing the model, he faced many obstacles because of having no experience plus raw dairy price at the low level. But, with the assistance of provincial Support Fund for Farmers and the ward’s Farmers Association, he has still determined to further pursue the animal husbandry model and always believed to get a success in the future.
Realizing that technique in breeding dairy cows is very important, Tuan took part in a class on how to breed dairy cows organized by provincial
So far, his family has developed a farmstead of 20 dairy cows and grown nearly 5,000 square meters of elephant grass. Growing this kind of grass with high yield has helped ensure feed supply for his family’s herd of dairy cows.
According to Tuan, breeding dairy cows brings high economic efficiency. The price of raw milk now is now high and stable. With the current price, breeding dairy cows brings dairy farmers more stable income than that of other animal husbandry models.
To get success in the model of breeding dairy cows, farmers need to have good breeding animals, appropriate breeding facilities and nutritional supply of feed. All have helped Tuan successfully develop the animal husbandry model. Every day, he collects more than 100 kg of milk from his dairy cows with the selling price of VND12.800 per kg. All milk products from his family are purchased by FrieslandCampina Vietnam Co.Ltd. with Dutch Lady brand.
Not only getting rich from breeding dairy cows, Tuan is also Chief of An Thanh ward’s safe vegetable club. With 15 members, the club specializes in growing various vegetables and fruits like cumbers, bitter melons…under Vietgap’s standards. This way also aims to deal with shortcomings in growing vegetables under traditional models, meeting market’s demand towards a sustainable and safe agriculture with high profit.
With a total of 5.5 hectares of 15 members, the club harvests 4 crops a year with the average profit of each crop estimated at VND30mln-VND40mln. Tuan’s family also secures the annual profit of nearly VND400mln from breeding dairy cows and growing safe vegetables.
Tuan’s family has got rich thanks to being brave in cultivation and animal husbandry. With achievements done in business and production, he has been honored as a good farmer at provincial level for many consecutive years. In 2014, he has also been honored as an outstanding individual in the emulation movement of “Working well, working creatively”.
