Five-month coffee exports surge to US$1.3 trillion

Vietnamese coffee exports reached 815,000 tonnes with a value of over US$1.3 trillion during the first five months of the year, representing a year-on-year increase of 5% in volume and 3.3% in value, according to the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

Coffee exports during May alone suffered a decline of 21.4% to US$220.58 million compared to the previous month, resulting in the average export price during the five-month period dropping by 1.6% to US$1,684 per tonne against the same period last year.

May saw the average export price to South Africa, Myanmar, Indonesia, Romania, Ukraine, and Israel enjoy an upward trend in contrast to exports to other markets such as Singapore and Poland which suffered decreases.

Overall, the five-month average export price of coffee to markets of South Africa, Laos, Myanmar, Indonesia and Poland obtained an upward trajectory, while exports to markets like Singapore, Romania, Ukraine and Israel saw a downward trend.

Elsewhere, the coffee export volume throughout May to some major markets, including Germany, the United States, Italy, Spain, Algeria, and Belgium plunged compared to the same period last year, while the export volume to Japan, Thailand, the Philippines, and Russia increased.

Throughout the five-month period, coffee exports to the German market enjoyed an on-year rise of 21.2% in volume and 15.2% in value, raking in US$202.16 million in the process.

Meanwhile, coffee exports to the US market suffered a drop of 12.5% in volume to 69,000 tonnes and 4.9% in value to US$124.2 million.
